I Kill Her

This is my 4,000th post.

I've decided to quit the aul blog.

I might call bullshit on this decision and not be able to do without it and keep blogging tomorrow, but probably not. I have been thinking about it for a while, and have almost done it on a few occassions over the last while, but I made a decision last night to just do it, especially after working through my feelings about de-blogging my life with Lili and FionnTimes.

There are LOADS of reasons for this decision. It's probably a bit wanky to work them out on this post, but then again in and around 1,000 people come to this blog every day, so I should probably explain to all of y'all who read and comment on UnaRocks parts of my thinking.

I want to feel what it's like not to be a blogger. I've been doing this since 2005.

I'm sort of sick of the obligations and constraints I feel about it, like thinking "oh, I have to blog that, I must do that."

I'm writing a book at the moment and I need time out to concentrate on that.

I think I've grown out of it. It's my 26th birthday next week. I've never been really comfortable with the persona that has grown out of how I blog. It's my own fault, of course, this whole 'UnaRocks' thing. When I was talking to Lili about it last night, she understood, she said that she could see how people misread me and mistake the personality that emerges from this blog as my actual self. I'm not at ease with that, and I never have been. But then again, that's my own fault, because I suppose that's how I've put myself across. I can totally understand how people would think I'm a self-promoting, ligging little dickhead, although I would like to think that I'm not really.

Although the blog has allowed me to get a few gigs or whatever, and has been like a seperate title ("journalist AND blogger") I sometimes wonder *dons Carrie Bradshaw mask* how it may have actually hindered me in ways. This blog is very bitty and instant. I am a better writer, a more serious person, a deeper thinker, and more professional than it suggests. I think that rarely shines through because of whatever format or voice I have created. That kind of concerns me.

So.

I will probably return to the blogging world in some form or another (or maybe even to UnaRocks), but for now, this is over. That might change, but that's where my mind is at at the moment. There are a couple of online projects floating around in my head, so I'll probably do those instead and avoid any sort of personal platform like this again, because I think it has run its course. And then there's The Book, which I have a lot of work to do on. I'm sure you can keep up with all these boring adventures on Twitter!

So yeah, I guess it's a big decision really. Even sort of emotional. I've made some great friends through blogging, and met some awesome people. And I've learnt a lot. I've had some great scraps and good laughs and fun discussions. But I'm looking forward to a little sense of freedom that will hopefully come from this. It's not that my heart isn't in it anymore, it's just that it's a nagging thing in my head that won't go away, and I've always been one for just fucking making decisions and then dealing with the fall out as it comes. Anyway, it's hardly that dramatic!

I just feel like stepping away from it for a while.

I hope I have contributed something to the blogging community, although I'm not quite sure what that is. All I know is that for some reason the number of people who read this grew and grew over a period of time, and that was always so weird to me and I never knew what to do about it apart from keep blogging...

Finally, I just want to thank everyone who stopped by and read a post, or commented, or slagged me off, or bigged me up, or gave me advice, or mailed me about stuff, or linked me, or talked about the blog, or liked it, or hated it. It has been real. The SoundCheck blogs and JacksGraff will continue. Also, I'd like to ask for an easy ride if I decide that I can't live without my addiction and come back to UnaRocks!

You rock,

Una Mullally

Una, I'm actually not surprised you quit after failing to win any award (or nomination) at the recent Blog Awards.

I think you will have read some of the great 'best blog' nominees and realised that you're simply not good enough.

'Unarocks' wasn't a good blog and will be forgotten pretty quickly.

There are many, many, many far better music blogs and yours always seem a weak and lazy attempt to copy a few others, including nialler9.

There are much better 'gay friendly' or 'gay-advocation', or whatever, blogs out there too.

There are many far better 'Journalists who blog' blogs -- the likes of Mark Tighe's Newspaperman, and Michael O'Toole's Crime Ink, are already far superior and they're only a few months old.

And having often read your stuff in the terribly downmarket (in recent years) Sunday Tribune, you're kidding yourself if you think you're a particularly good writer. You're not.

Nor have I ever read a single article or blog that made me think you were even remotely clever.

I'm not trying to be mean-spirited, just honest. I'm sure you're perfectly lovely as a person.

Anyway, you have dished out enough back-slaps and fawning compliments to other bloggers in 4,000 posts to deserve more than 80 fond wishes of farewell.

However, they are all undeserved based on the quality of your blog over the past 3 years.

Sadly though I agree that you'll surely come back to blogging sometime!

UnaRocks said...

@restrictedview - that would DEFO be something worth blogging about!

@Joop - You can't think whatever you want about my motivations to quit, but the fact is, I have outlined them honestly in the post, and if you want to come up with your own skewed reasons, then please, go ahead and waste your time doing that.

I don't care about your negativity, but I want to respond because throughout this whole blogging adventure, I've always felt people who slag me off mercilessly deserved to be taken to task on it, because I tend not to take shit from people in my space that isn't based on a solid opinion, but just on someone being a negative hater such as yourself.

I've NEVER contended that this is an amazing blog and regarding one you reference, Nialler's, of course, he has the best music blog in the country, Nialler is a mate and I have nothing but respect for him. I don't think you can compare this blog to his, they are totally different.

Regarding "gay friendy" or "gay advocate". I just don't get that, dude. Are you straight? Does that make you a "straight advocate" spreading the news of straightness everywhere simply by definition of your sexuality. What are you getting at here?

So, yeah, go on, you can slag me off, have a pop at my job, say I'm a shit writer who write for a shit paper, and that people don't give a fuck about this blog and never did, but you, you little shithead, you hide under the guise of anonymity and can say whatever you want. I can't do that, because I'm not a cowardly little fuck who sits at a computer picking holes in the work of someone who is just trying to do their job and write a blog and be positive and get by.

And you can go ahead and say this isn't "mean-spirited" but it is. How would you like it if I picked apart your own work? What do you do, man? Give me a look at that and let me analyse it and tell you how shit you are at what you do? How would that feel to you?

Come on, fess up? Because I KNOW sweetheart, that you would NEVER EVER try and say these things to me in public, whoever you are, because if you have to go online ANONYMOUSLY and slag someone off, then that only makes you a little fucking pussy.

And one more thing - you bang on about how shit I am and how this blog sucks, and how my articles in the paper suck, you FUCKING MORON, you're the one reading them! You're the one wasting your time engaging in something you don't even like! What are you, a fucking masochist? How stupid is that? If you don't like my shit, then fuck off!

You make me LOL!

oh my god - whats his name - joop the loop - what a complete pile of wank.

That was pure nastiness in the pretence of 'honesty'. That wasn't an honesty to be admired or read properly - that was a pure obnoxious, arrogant outpouring. I'm guessing you don't actually like yourself that much joop. Go use some of that 'honesty' on yourself and get some good karma juices flowing.
There's a world of difference in subjective honest writing/ opinions which you were attempting and being full of shit - which is what came across .

Una - I read your article on living in dublin - o'connell st- I'm not much of a writer but I love reading and I admired how easily you put thoughts into words - the breeze from the window, the imagery of everyone rushing around below- I just loved the article - thanks for it.
It was like a written photo.
I've always seen too many disadvantages to writing an online blog (ridiculous onslaughts like joops being a huge reason!) so although I think its a shame that your cool female voice isnt out there in blog world anymore - there are many other cool female voices in blog world (thankfully) and I think it's great that you've made the decision to put your blog time into something else which essentially will mean more to you and your development.
Good for you.
Good luck with it - I'm looking forward to what you come up with.
and if you dont come up with anything thats cool too.
big up, high five, kind vibes, good vibrations, future love, siobhan x
