Dunno...criticise a U2 song early at your peril...they tend to grow on you then you can't talk it back...
I will say, however, that their perfomance of Pride at tthe Lincoln Memorial was quite possibly their worst live one ever...they were like a bad clone band...
I have a problem. Una slags off one of the world's most successful bands but she's never written a song that's been recorded; never played a live gig in front of anyone other than her mirror; and writes a lame column for pretty much the worst broadsheet newspaper in Ireland.
Then Una writes a blog comment praising her 'extraordinaire' photographer friend Lili, who's only bloody ordinary and has never even won a photgraphy award in her brief and dull career!
So it's ok on this site for someone who knowns notjing about how to creat music to dismiss a mega-successful band; yet equally okay to heap praise on a friend's work, just because they are a friend?
I am half-arsed not to engage, but you actually did get a few things wrong, so although you're entitled to your opinion, there are dodgy facts there that need to be corrected.
"she's never written a song that's been recorded" - guess what?! I have! MeNoFemBo's debut track gained some radioplay on Phantom after it was released last year on a limited 10 inch vinyl alongside tracks by Adrian Crowley, Goodtime John and More Tiny Giants on Angel She's A Killer Records. Here's a list of the stockists you can buy it from in Britain and Ireland http://www.angelshesakiller.com/stockists.html
We're currently writing and demoing at the moment, and some new tunes I'm really excited about will be up on MySpace soon. I'm sure you can't wait to hear them.
"Una writes a blog comment praising her 'extraordinaire' photographer friend Lili, who's only bloody ordinary and has never even won a photgraphy award in her brief and dull career!" - Lili is recognised widely as one of the best music and fashion photographers in the business in Ireland over the past decade. She won the National Student Media Award for Photographer of the Year in 2005 and has been published in Grazia (UK), Tatler (IRE), U Magazine (IRE), Candy Magazine (IRE), Playboy (USA), LIFE Magazine (Sunday Independent), Prudence (IRE), Totally Dublin (IRE), Temple Bar Magazine (IRE), The Sunday Tribune (IRE), The Sunday World (IRE), The Star (IRE), The Sun (IRE), VIP Magazine (IRE), RSVP Magazine (IRE), Galway Now / Cork Now / Limerick Now (IRE), InDublin (IRE), Stellar (IRE) and AU. She has been nominated for the Irish Blog Awards a bunch of times. She has photographed campaigns for Heineken, Specsavers, O'Briens, Shiseido, Wrangler amongst others, and has photographed probably thousands of bands, gigs and models. So yes, she is a photographer 'extraordinaire'.
Wow - I'm astonished. One of the most promising U2 tracks in years and you're dissing it. It sounded more like QoTSA than U2 when I heard it first, so much so that I'm convinced that Josh Homme had some sort of a hand in it somewhere. I won't say it's a radical departure from "formula U2" but the sound is good. Anyone can say it's "shit" so wheres the critical analysis of why it's shit. Convince us!
Am I U2 fan? Meh... I don't really care what they do, but that new track has merit.
Lyrically its cliched to the point of practically being a case of U2 magnetic poetry. The melody is old and obvious, the guitar sound is boring and the structure is messy. There is no spark to it, no progression, no nothing. It sounds like something left on the floor during the Pop era.
The new U2 track is pretty good me thinks, well produced. Forget he's a nob and just listen to the track and it grows on you.
I remember when the Fly was released (long before mouthy nobodies were allowed to graffiti their boring views on the net...and heres me doing it :)
Nobody liked it. Now its a classic.
my 2 cents? This is a blog, not a paper...so its a bird writing a diary and mentioning all her naff mates...shock horror sloane. I really disagree with Una's views on the track though.I think if people let their personal feelings on Bono " the embarrassing uncle" and listened without prejudice they may like it.
Trendy muso journo gives legendary rock band the thumbs down? i'm shocked :)
Una hit the nail on the head by describing it as 'messy'...if any word describes the song, it is that. They're trying so hard to make a BIG IMPRESSION WITH THE LEAD-OFF SINGLE COS IT'S U2 AND WE'RE BACK!!! They're trying to pack so many ideas into it that the song just sounds all over the shop and well, messy. What's up with the drumming? Larry sounds like he's hitting a biscuit tin for most of it. Bono's lyrics are even more trite than usual. Terrible. This is from someone who actually likes a lot of U2 stuff, 'Achtung baby' is a masterpiece, but this is woeful.
UnaRocks does not UPLOAD music. All music links provided are ones that already exist online, or mp3s from band and record label websites. If you are in a band / band management and wish me to remove any of these links, I will, of course, oblige. UnaRocks believes that music sharing actively enriches our musical climate. Music sharing is as old as music itself. People who download music buy more records, go to more gigs, and buy more music merchandise than those who do not. The recent phenomonan of online music sharing has been credited to the ongoing resurgance in the live music scene across our world, and the increasing successes of 'indie' or 'underground' bands. In turn, if you are in a band / band management and wish me to post a link to a song for the pleasure of the readers of UnaRocks, please do not hesitate to contact me by commenting on this blog. Peace.

If Bono just stopped hamming it up to the max for one second, it would be far more bearable.
Then again, they looked fucking freezing.

This sure is a cutting-edge blog!
@ Sloane: Someone's in a stinker today!

Oh, and the U2 song is still shit.
Love them or hate then
It is still a shit song.
I thought it was a piss take when i first heard it

Quite surprised by it. With Killers and Coldplay on the scene now its hard for U2 to release tracks off their album that won't sound like those bands.
Its not THAT bad - agreed its lyrically cliched U2 but more than accomplished.
Rick will be forced to play it presumably as it will be on the 2fm playlist. Pity that, enjoyed him reading out texts so much ;)

wait, so I'm meant to like it just because it's predictable of me not to like it?
:)
I'm just giving my honest opinion...
Listened to it again there, still shit! *returns to Dance Mother*
What does Conor (CW) think? He's a U2 fan...
I'm hoping it will grow on me.
And there's usually a period of that with me with any U2 material.
That said, the two first releases from the last two albums (Vertigo and, in particular, Beautiful Day) were so much more instantly enjoyable.
This is the sort of thing I expected it to sound like but I'm not hugely taken with it yet.
And anyone on here who reckons they're a bigger U2 fan than me, I will meet them somewhere and fight them.

It could've been so much better if they just covered this....
