Oxegen festival to go from three days to four?

I know, I know, I know, it's FAR too early to talk about music festivals (actually, have you all got your Glasto tickets yet?), but a jump over to the Oxegen 2009 website which is being discussed on the Electric Picnic forum sees this time table taking form:

Thursday 9th July: 6PM - 12AM

Friday 10th July: 12PM - 12AM

Saturday 11th July: 12PM - 12AM

Sunday 12th July: 12PM - 6PM

they had mini-events on on the thursday as well, didn't they? some smaller bands playing sets (some on campsite stages), the red bull thing was open from thursday evening on..

I just thought they were campsite gigs. If they're going to take off Sunday night, then you'd imagine they'd have to have main arena stuff on Thursday.

I don't really know, though.

Got my glastonbury ticket and I would recommend it to everyone in Ireland to come over and invade. The four million check points at electric picnic did my nut in.

You can bring your own drink supplies anywhere in the festival without getting hassled and at £175, its going to be cheaper than Oxegen and Electric Picnic. Last year I arrived there on the Wednesday morning and left late MOnday night. There was no one coming round kicking my tent telling us we had five minutes to get the fuck out of the place.

@ Paddy: Glasto was just so brilliant last year.

One thing I will say from a press point of view: the amount of hassle that happens over and over every year for journalists @ Oxegen and Electric Picnic is a pain. There are always problems with guest list, Qing to get your press pass, being sent all over the place because nobody has the right information, the press room closing at inappropriate times, problems with press camping and so on.

Then at Glasto last year, with what, over 150,000 people at the festival, and hundreds and hundreds (thousands?) of journalists from all over the world attending, you simply apply and pay in advance for your pass, and rock up to a tiny caravan on the site, where some stoner press officer gives you your laminate with no hassle and that's it. I couldn't BELIEVE how simple and brilliantly organised it was.

I know it might seem like I'm whining and that people might tell me to shut up because I don't have to pay for my ticket (BTW, you do have to pay for your Glasto press pass and make donations @ the Picnic, which I have no problem with whatsoever. I don't really see it as 'blagging' when you're working at the festival), but when you're a journalist working at a festival, running around all day doing interviews or whatever, and in the end PROVIDING PRESS for the organisers of festivals, they really need to learn to treat press better, and should take a leaf out of Glasto organisers in terms of respect and simplicity.

This goes for both Oxegen and Electric Picnic, and whatever other Irish festivals. The contrast with how organisers treat press @ Glasto is astounding.

I reckon its Oxegen pulling a fast one as usual. I'd say its a few bands in the camp site on a thursday night and huzzah a four day festival.

Last year they were charging people an extra €20 to camp on the Thursday night, incredible

Ticket got for Glasto, can't wait, second time going. The joy of not having to conceal alcohol over parts of body or walking an extra 100 metres to where security is lax

Well taking the six hours from Sunday and putting them on Thursday hardly constitutes a four day festival now does it? Why not divy up friday and sat and make it a six dayer! Besides who the hell would want to spend anymore time down at oxegen. Three days was bad enough last year.

I went to Oxegen a couple of times (once camping), but haven't gone the last couple of years. I heard the atmosphere wasn't great. Having said that, our tents were slashed at Electric Picnic last year and a few people I know were robbed. I'll probably go abroad for my fest fix this year.

@ Joe: I don't think violence at music festivals is exclusively an Irish thing.

That said, I think people have problems with the Oxegen atmosphere because the age profile is so much younger and for a lot of teenagers, it's their first weekend away from home on their own, and they all get shitfaced and act up. It's fine if you're one of them (and God knows, I did a fair amount of Witnness boozing when I was 18/19) but if you're not, it can be intimidating and annoying.

At Glasto last year, I didn't see any major drunkeness, but I think that's because there's a far bigger emphasis on drugs than booze. I'm not advocating drug use, but if a load of people in a field are stoned or doing pills, there's going to be far less trouble than if everyone is shitfaced.

Personally, I would prefer to be surrounded by a load of acid-fucked hippies than vodka-fucked teenagers.

@Joe - come glastonbury, far less annoying daytime drunk kids. not much you can do about assholes slashing tents, you were just unlucky.

@Una - was that you I seen howling at the moon at the stone circle.

21 weeks to go!
