like tears, wipe that rain away

Grr! I'm so annoyed at the weather. Took a very muggy stroll yesterday evening to The Bank for TTV drinks and went out for a cigarette later and it was PISSING rain. Boo-urns. We went to Chemistry @ Spy after, which as usual was jammers and fun, and full of hot people.

Was perusing Thrill Pier this morning and found this brilliantly surreal video of Dan Deacon on NBC:

Still, how annoying is the rain and the darkness? As McMorrow said this morning, you almost expect to see Christmas lights twinkling along Baggot Street it's so wintery.

In other news, if you didn't make it to Oxegen, you can watch 63 hours of coverage from the festival on MTV2 from 7pm tomorrow. There will also be coverage on VHI and TMF over the weekend. Next Friday, if you are registered on Oxegen.ie, you'll be able to buy early bird tickets for the 2009 festival. €224.50 for weekend camping, if you buy four, you get a free car parking space, and if you want to camp on Thursday night as well, you have to buy an additional €20 camping ticket.

Looking for something to do this weekend in Dublin? There isn't really much on that I can see apart from this stuff...
Friday
Philth & Seki @ Kennedy's - €10
SoundCheck @ Spy - free and awesome
Phantom First Friday @ ALT - €10

Saturday
Nothing of note. Am I wrong?

Sunday
Bonde Do Role and Stereo MCs @ Crawdaddy - €20
Calvin Harris (DJ set) @ Spy - €12.50

Acceptable in the 80s / recession times

Monsieur Calvin Harris is DJing @ Spy this Bank Holiday Sunday fresh off the back of his massive number one tune with Dizzee Rascal 'Dance Wiv Me'.

There's a pre-party in Urban Outfitters from 6pm to 8.30pm, with 10% off all those UO clothes and... FREE BOOZE! So get there early, I would imagine.

Tickets for the Spy gig are €12.50 and you can get them at www.tickets.ies/spy , City Discs and www.ticketmaster.ie

I would be totally going to this, but I shall be partying in Brighton that day, so no dice.

Calvin Johnson @ Hideaway House

Yay! Eventually managed to upload the video. I must apologise for (a) the quality, because it was taken on my crappy little camera, and (b) the general bad filming and wandering, unbalanced nature of it. This is down to the fact that Ragin force fed me vodka and lucozade before the gig.

Anyway, here it is:

Looks pretty frickin scary to me. I'm still not convinced whether David Yates is the best person to direct Harry Potter films though...

Saturday night at the (outdoor) movies

I'm going to see Brokeback Mountain at Somerset House (pictured) in London on Saturday night. V excited. They even have themed menus for every film! So that means vegetable or beef chilli with corn bread (less than a fiver for both). There are DJs before each movie, and there is no fixed seating, so you just bring cushions and rugs and things. Comfy! And there's a bar. Movies and beer. Yumsies.

Back in Dublin, I heard a while ago that there were going to be drive-in movies at Phoenix Park soon @ Farmleigh. They start on August 9th with screenings at 4.30pm and 9pm. Tickets are free! Yay! You can apply for tickets to 'The Snapper' on Saturday 9th here, or 'The Shining' on the same day (think that's the later screening) here.

One of my favourite movies EVER, 'Grease', is on Sunday August 10th, get tickets here, or if you're not into the ramalamalama, then get tickets to 'Jaws' on the same day here.

Ham Sandwich @ SoundCheck tomorrow!

Yo! In case y'all didn't know, Podge and Niamh from Ham Sandwich will be DJing @ SoundCheck in Spy tomorrow. Should be loads of fun! Head down and check it out.
SoundCheck is at Spy on South William Street from 7pm to 11pm every Thursday and Friday. It's FREE in, cocktails are TWO FOR ONE and we always have some tasty sweet treats in case you missed dinner. Guest DJs and SoundCheck resident DJs play the best mix of indie and beyond. Our July chart is here.

Upcoming guest DJs SoundCheck include Jim Carroll, CODES, Sinead Ni Mhordha, You're Only Massive, Anthony Remedy, Queen Kong, Nadine O'Regan and loads more.

Keep an eye on the SoundCheck blog, the MySpace and the Facebook group for updates, SoundCheck news, the latest on just added guest DJs and more info. See y'all down there!

Question: how many BBQs are too many BBQs

Answer: you can never have too many BBQs.

And so, me, Lili, IanoFemBo, Anthony, YoCo and Antonia and Cina BBQd our faces off last night on Lili's roof. I've yet to find a view in Dublin that rivals Lili's. It's an entire panorama of the city, so cool. We had burgers (which Lili made from scratch), various types of sausages, pork chops and ribs. Yumsies. All washed down with a keg of Krombacher that sprayed all over me when I tried to work it.

I was very scared last night when it started raining, but then today is another beautiful day. YAY! It's so crazy how the weather impacts on your mood, innit? Even if the weather does break this week, I won't be so sadsies because I'm off to Valencia on Monday and a quick check of the weather there says 31 degrees. Mwoahaha.

The Dark Knight

AMAZING. Went to see it last night. So good. Go see it NOW if you haven't already. Before I went to watch it (with RoRo, Johnny B, Anthony, YoCo, Antonia and Cina) we hung out at the Kings of Concrete thing @ Wood Quay which was loads of fun; skateboarding, parkour, breakdancing, burgers and a nice sit down. Such a nice day yesterday (and today, incidently), so I'm full of the joys of summer. Also rediscovered my love of Icebergers.

Calvin Johnson @ Hideaway House

Went to one of the best gigs and venues in a long time last night: Calvin Johnson @ Hideaway House in Deansgrange. Me and Ragin got on the aul 45 bus and headed out, vodka and lucozade in tow.

Hideaway House is lived in by Dylan from Hideaway Records (and also Ragin's cousin) and he has gigs now and then in the gaff. It's a simple set up. The first band (I can't remember their name) was awesome. Really sweet and funny low-fi alt-pop. Crayonsmith were next (I watched them from the window at the back of the house) and then Calvin Johnson who led people like the Pied Piper down the back on the garden. His stage was the grass, his backdrop was an overgrown hedge. Brilliant stuff. His voice is so deep and scary in a kind of hypnotic way. Big up to Dylan. You rock.

After that, me and Ragin got a taxi into town (and were given out for dancing in the taxi, understandably) and hit the G and then the Tivoli for some carnage. I did a disappearing act early enough. Such fun times though.

Ragin christened me Asbo Spice this morning, I think it might stick. I'm in the 'hood now. Just BBQd me some ribs. Yumsies.

I'm trying to upload a video of the gig, but YouTube is being a fucker. State magazine homies were there too, so I'm sure you'll see some coverage of it soon. Here's a video I took of walking through the gaff:

RTE: redefining 'celebrity'

The 13 'celebrities' who will star on the upcoming reality TV programme 'Failte Towers' have been named:

Evelyn Cusack
Jennifer Maguire
Claire Tully
Séan Ó Dómhnaill
Patricia McKenna
Donna and Joseph McCaul
Luke Thomas
John Creedon
Brian Dowling
Michelle Heaton
Liz O'Kane
Don Baker

You can't slag it though, because it's for charity, which makes it ok, right? C'mon everybody etc.

Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Whatever scrap debut album ahead of its release

Woah!. What a waste of time and money. The album promos were already sent out, the reviews are already in. Bizarre situation

From XFM:

"Joe Lean And The Jing Jang Jong have scrapped their forthcoming album following advice from their manager. The self-titled debut was due to be released by Vertigo on August 4, but their boss Raye Cosbert advised them that the material wasn’t representative of the group as they are now.

"They've grown as musicians, the album was recorded too early in their career," Cosbert told the NME. "The band have all agreed that's it's the best thing to do.” A Vertigo spokesman said, “We completely respect our artists’ creative decisions.”

Promo copies have already been sent out to journalists, meaning the “unrepresentative” tracks are out there."

I'm sure the label and management are only delighted...

Púca Chair!

Burco alerts me to a long lost video of me and her playing 'Púca Chair':

'Púca Chair' involved three key ingredients:

1. A twirly chair

2. A hill

3. Gin

Fun times.

Brilliant restaurant critic rant

This is my favourite bit:

"I wrote: "I can't think of a nicer place to sit this spring over a glass of rosé and watch the boys and girls in the street outside smiling gaily to each other, and wondering where to go for a nosh."

It appeared as: "I can't think of a nicer place to sit this spring over a glass of rosé and watch the boys and girls in the street outside smiling gaily to each other, and wondering where to go for nosh."

There is no length issue. This is someone thinking, "I'll just remove this indefinite article because Coren is an illiterate cunt and i know best."

Well, you fucking don't. This was shit, shit subediting..." and so on.

Stay out late this weekend

Because from next Wednesday, you won't be allowed to, what with the STUPID new licensing laws coming in.

Ireland is so embarrassing.

New Phantom schedule

PHANTOM 105.2 ANNOUNCES NEW MORNING SCHEDULE
MICHELLE DOHERTY, SINÉAD NÍ MHÓRDA, RICHIE MCCORMACK AND CHARLOTTE FLOOD JOIN MORNING TEAM

Dublin, 23 July 2008 – Phantom 105.2, current holder of the PPI Music Station of the Year Award, today revealed its revamped breakfast and morning schedule, complete with a new line up of presenters. The new schedule will air on Monday 28th July.

The breakfast show, Pure Morning, which will run from 7am-10am, will be hosted by well known DJ, Richie McCormack, supported by Charlotte Flood. Richie has worked with Phantom 105.2 since 2002 and for the past two years has been working with the station presenting its new music show 'The Producers' which gives many bands their first exposure on Irish radio and producing the popular 'Stadium Rock' on Saturday afternoons. Charlotte is new to Phantom and joins the station from XFM in South Wales.

Michelle Doherty, who also presents Channel 6’s late night interactive music show ‘Nightshift’, will present ‘Finest Worksongs’ from 10am-Noon. Michelle will bring her love and knowledge of the alternative music scene to deliver great music for those at work.

Front Row with Sinéad Ní Mhórdha will air from Noon – 2pm and bring listeners music, entertainment news and interviews. Sinéad, who’s been described as “Ireland's First Female DJ Superstar” by The Star and as “a music junkie and one of Phantom's "leading lights” by the Sunday Independent, has been with Phantom since 2004. After initially joining in 2004, Sinéad returned to the airwaves on Halloween 2006 to re-join the ranks as Presenter on Phantom 105.2.

Ger Roe, CEO, Phantom 105.2 said, “We’re coming up to our two year anniversary and we pride ourselves on listening to our audience and delivering what they want. We’ve decided to revamp our breakfast and morning schedule to bring our listeners a mix of new talent and old favourites in an exciting new combination.

Had tápás (Irish tapas TM) in Ragin's gaff. YUMSIES; Spanish omelette, some salad, peppers stuffed with cream cheese, parma ham, batch loaf, Lucozade, tea and yogurt peanuts. We also debated the idea of watching 2 Girls 1 Cup after eating and then decided against it, because I really didn't want to vom. So we watched some reaction videos instead and listened to Girl Talk.

Then we walked to the Porterhouse, took some graf snaps, met Brian and then Fionn and Aran inside. Then we went to Panti's Make & Do, where the theme was paper plate masks inspired by the movies. I outdid myself with a version of Napoleon Dynamite, and Aran's geisha, Fionn's weird chick from Death Becomes Her, Brian's turtle and Ragin's fried green tomato were all well received. But we didn't win. Crapsies. Anyway, it was loads of fun, even if I now have white paint all over my grey blazer.

Mercury Music Prize shortlist announced

Sorry, the 'Nationwide Mercury Prize'

Adele “19″
British Sea Power “Do You Like Rock Music?”
Burial “Untrue”
Elbow “The Seldom Seen Kid”
Estelle “Shine”
The Last Shadow Puppets “The Age Of The Understatement”
Laura Marling “Alas I Cannot Swim”
Neon Neon “Stainless Style”
Portico Quartet “Knee-Deep In The North Sea”
Robert Plant And Alison Krauss “Raising Sand”
Radiohead “In Rainbows”
Rachel Unthank And The Winterset “The Bairns”

'Untrue' is the best album there by a million miles (and I say that wihout having heard the usual token whoareyiz - Portico Quartet and Rachel Unthank and the Winterset.) Nomination for The Last Shadow Puppets? Hmmm. Quite an average album. Chicks be reprazentin though, nearly half of the nominees are women.

So, who would collect the album for Burial?

L Word spin-off show in the works

YAYSIES! According to Reuters, a spin-off show involving one of the characters from the L Word is being worked on by Ilene Chaiken, ahead of the L Word's sixth and final season. The identity of the chosen actress has not yet been revealed to the cast.

Oooooooooh!

I'm hoping for Alice.

Who would you like to see get the L Word spin off? Alice? Shane? Bette? Tina (NO WAYSIES)? Jenny? Imagine if it was someone totally lame like Kit. That would be V annoying.

PS: Bring back Carmen.

Coldplay to open O2

says Rick. The budding fashion designers will take their stripped down live show promoting their new album with a stupid name to the former Point on Sunday December 21st. Tickets are €54.80, on sale this Friday @ 9am.

*update* MCD has confirmed Coldplay are "the first act to be announced for The O2", not necessarily the ones opening it.

Also, there's no word of O2 customers getting a jump on tickets either...

You're Only Massive (kinda) call it a day, and move on to the next level

Their MySpace says:

"I am Megan.
Maebh and I had a chat today while perusing some fashion magazines.
We talked about the direction Y.O.M. is taking. We both agree that it has evolved past our lovably ramshackle beginnings, with my bandy decks and scratched records, not-practising in my bedroom.
We are at a crossroads, just like the seminal Britney Spears movie Crossroads.
I am more interested in trying to develop my writing and dedicate a chunk of my life to that, while Maebh is eager as a beaver to develop musically.
I will continue to contribute to Y.O.M., beginning with a Y.O.M. zine, which will be out around the time Dot-Dash comes out.

We're playing in Leitrim and Roscommon this Saturday, and at a DYT fundraiser in Crawdaddy on Sunday, Our final gig together will be in Trickster in Berlin on Saturday 26th; although I will be doing a DJ set on the 7th of August at Soundcheck at the Spy bar.
After these gigs, Maebh will start working alone on a new set to promote Dot-Dash, the split LP with Queen Kong.

I of course wish Maebh all the best in her future endeavours, and will refrain from anonymously badmouthing her on the internet.
As Destiny's Child so memorably sang,
"I'm not gon' hate on you in the magazines
(I'm betta than that)
I'm not gon' compromise my Christianity
(I'm betta than that)
You KNOW I'm not gon' diss you on the internet-
CAUSE MY MAMA TAUGHT ME BETTA THAN THAT."

Thanks to everyone who came to gigs and said nice things.
Lots of Massive love,
megan."

Ze Weekend

I was sick late last week: crappy coughy chest combined with cold and general Oxegen flu. To cure what ailed me, I went north to Donegal for some fresh air, quality time with Derek 2.0 and Super Dee, and some healing Football Special (which is a Donegal drink I just discovered this weekend. Yumsies. Can't help thinking what a vodka and Football Special would taste like. May have to try that soon.)

There was country air, walks on the beach and the fantastic play that Derek wrote called Maladjusted and Misappropriated, which was AWESOME. Didn't get a chance to see it on its run in Dublin, so was really glad to check it out at last.

Donegal is so beautiful. Being from Dublin, I approach the countryside with a complete wide-eyed idiocy (LOOK! SHEEP!), having deep thoughts while looking at mountains, and being amazed at the lack of light polution (the moon did look amazing on Satuday night, though) and thinking of Denny and Failte Ireland ads while sitting in a small pub. Still, it's such a nice part of the country. In fact, it's my favourite, tied with Sligo, Connemara and west Cork.

The bus to Donegal takes 4 hours. On the way back I was on my own and in that time managed to read a lot of papers (the Tribune, Observer, Sindo, Sunday Times and the Sunday World). I was on my own until a nutter got on at Monaghan and insisted on sitting next to me and showing me photographs she had taken of puffins. Now, I like puffins and all, but there's a time and a place. And also, there's only so many things you can say about pictures of puffins because they all look the same.

Anyway. Back in the small smoke now, listening to Rick doing Gerry Ryan's slot, which is brilliant. Oh, and SoundCheck was hella-fun on Thursday.
