While browsing the Telegraph's 28 'spectacular' pictures of the year, which I saw linked on Rick's blog I noticed most of them depict two human obsessions; fire and flying. I would have thought much more of them would cover nature or something, but it's not, 2008 was all about fire and flying. Some of them even combine the two; like two planes performing stunts to a backdrop of fire in Dubai, and firefighters extinguising flames of a military jet after a crash in San Diego.
Then there's a plane crash in Brussels, a light aircraft hanging from power lines in Germany, a stuntman jumping through a ring of fire in Russia, fireworks at The Palm in Dubai, fireworks at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, two pictures of volcanos, Red Star Belgrade fans with red torches in a stadium, a motorcyclist doing a double backflip (that comes under my flying category), a Swiss military pilot on a rocketeer flight, a stunt man in flames on a catwalk, a fire in Toronto, a firefighter in California, firefighters in Seoul, a surfer jumping through the air (x2, flying again) and a man diving from a platform at the Olympics.
So that's 19 out of 28 pictures are about fire, flying, or both.
I don't really know what it means, I'm just sayin'.
