Maladjusted

If you are swanky and cultured like me, you'll be making your way down to the Bewley's Cafe Theatre next week at 1.30pm to catch Derek O'Connor aka Derek 2.0's new play starring Mick Nolan. It looks awesome, and I like this particular theatre ("nice space" *strokes chin*) and Derek is of course a LEDGEBAG (TM: Nialler9), so check ch ch ch che check it out.
Tickets are €13/€15.
I think the concession price kicks in if you wear a FOKF t-shirt.
Stuart Clarke of Hotpress on the Last Word (Today FM) yesterday
"Can I just stress that MCD generally run fantastic gigs. They are top notch promoters, among the best in Europe."
Jaysus Stuart, the guest list submissions for Oxegen '08 are a while away yet... chill!

The return of Miss Lili
I missed my Lili when she was away. But now she's (nearly) back - woohoo! If you're around the Hard Working Class Heroes site this evening at 6pm, check out the photography exhibition which is launching at that time, as it includes some awesome photees from Lili.

Excellent piece on the HPV vaccine
This vaccine is available privately in Ireland. It has been recommended that the vaccine be rolled out nationwide, but unsurprisingly such plans although promised, are caught in a messy web of red tape and the bureaucracy of our health service and its vested interests.

Shopping :(
I was in a FOWLER yesterday, so solution: spend loads of money I don't have on clothes I will never wear. These included paint splashed blue and white leggings, mini 1980s adidas white shiney gym shorts, a sparkly black micro dress and a mirror in the shape of a squirrel as a necklace, among other useless items.
I HATE shopping. I only ever do it on my own in bursts of 90 minutes in about three shops maybe once every two months and buy loads of random shit of which I will wear maybe 40%. The rest lies sadly in my wardrobe.
But I've decided that tomorrow, I will wear all of the stuff I say I never will, which means if you see someone at Hard Working Class Heroes in a beige and brown trilby, white gym shorts, gaudy leggings, a fur coat and nike high tops, you will know who it is.

kiss kiss
KISS (a club night for chicks) is on in the Tivoli this Saturday. Joycer summed it up perfectly when I asked her - via a Bebo post comment - if she was looking forward to it. Her reply is quite priceless:
"Not even.
That one night a month when mary and bernie (who've been together for 18 years and have three cats and a jeep but no kids cos they're both reeeeal butch) come out to dance to Mika.
And the rest of the lesbians search desperately for a new girlfriend (to be discarded two weeks later cos they're "Still in love with their ex and its just too much too soon". Said ex is sleeping with their best friend who they went out with for three years. While sleeping with the first ex..)
Yes. i'll be there."

The 'Women Today Poll' in The Irish Times today promised to shed some pinkish light on what women really, really think. Not a lot, is the answer. Curiously, 57% of women counted 'personal care (skin/hair)' as "very important", while 54% cited their 'husband/boyfriend' as "very important." Apart from the presumption that a woman's only option of partnership is said 'husband/boyfriend', does this mean we really, really value invisible pores and the prevention of split ends more than lurve?
It's hard to fathom that this is the case. (Although this is coming from someone who doesn't own a hairdryer.)
9% said politics were "very important", 19% said feminism was "very important", although 'equality of the sexes' - the nu-feminism - got a gasping 44% in the "very important" stakes.
And at the top of the "very important" chart at 65% was 'financial independence'.
You'd wonder if some of the options posed on this poll ('taking care of children', 'how others see me', 'personal care', 'female friends', 'work in the home') would be posed in a poll of what men really, really think. By allowing for such - what the authors clearly thought were - gender-specific questions, of course you're going to end up with results that portray women as insecure little things obsessed with how they look and who they surround themselves with.
Am I being too harsh, or was the poll today an accurate portrayal of the thoughts and desires of the modern Irish woman?

Babyshambles

You know what? I fucking LOVE the fact that their new record is awesome. I've always liked Babyshambles, and loved 'Down In Albion'. I don't give a crap what Pete Doherty smokes or shoots, and I think anyone preoccupied with it, the people who say "Pete Doherty is such an idiot, I hate him, he's a loser etc." well, how can you hate someone you don't know? If you hate his lifestyle, why pay attention to it? Just listen to the fucking music, if you don't pay attention to the frills that the red tops staple on to sleeve notes to sell papers, then you won't be bothered by them. The tunes speak louder than anything else ever could. And 'Shotter's Nation' is brilliant.

MacGyver: damn your beautiful eyes
So I met MacGyver yesterday. He is SO NICE and cool and hawt and he was wearing two watches. He was really sweet, but unfortunately made me be late for TTV last night so by the time I had rushed like a crazy person into RTE I actually felt like MacGyver myself.
Met Lainey and Dee for a glass of wine in South William and then me and Adrian MeNoFemBo and Robin went down to the Pod for the launch of Halo 3. There was yummy Asahi beer - definately one of my new favourite beers (well, top twenty anyway.)

Then me and Adrian knocked up to studio 109 to burn the best track in the world 'Sit On My Face'. Adrian is going to fix it up this week, so you'll all be able to hear it soon. Dee and Lainey were there drinking Coronas and we all danced around like fools.

Hibernation

I'm in hibernation this week. So this blog will probably suck. No goings on at all. It's all in preparation for the mammoth party that will be Hard Working Class Heroes this weekend. So, no hanging out with MacGyver in the Pod (doesn't matter, considering I have a private audience with him anyway), no Feist @ Tripod, no Jack Daniels Party at the Village on Thursday. It's for the best.

Anyway, in retrospect, it was probably not the brightest idea to start drinking vodka fruit punch at 3 in the afternoon, but live and learn. Well, live anyway. Ragin Spice, Wreck It and Coooonnaaayyy came along too and we had loads of fun. The best moment came when I won THIRD PLACE in the 'Gayest Tart in Dublin' competition, which was a baking competition before you start making any jokes.
Anyway, it just goes to show if you make an effort, you will be rewarded, because I bought a madeira cake in Dunnes for €1.26 and passed it off as a butch lesbian cake and because there were only two other cakes in the competition, Anna Nolan and Panti were forced to award me with a prize - two bottles of wine and a t-shirt. Awesome.
Delorentos & Ham Sandwich @ Whelan's on Saturday
I didn't think it was possible for Delorentos to put in a better performance than their Friday night gig @ Whelan's. But they did. And it was a storming set, probably the best I've ever seen them play. Incredibly tight, just perfect. Myself and Adrian went along and Adrian - a cynical perfectionist - was blown away. That's how good they were. Ham Sandwich were also amazing. I love watching them play. In fact, I could probably go to a gig of theirs every night and not get bored.
Met Niamh briefly and I think we are both equally excited about HWCH. Also met Ollie outside drinking Buckfast. Champion. Big ups to Dan and Hugh for the guestlist.
I was wrecked, so I went home, but guess what - I got my wallet back! It was behind the bar, €20 still in it, but all of my business cards gone, weird weirdness. So someone is clearly going around town masquerading as me.

MeNoFemBo - first ever recording session!
You will be pleased to know that along with some champion beering on Saturday, myself and Adrian MeNoFemBo managed to record one of the greatest songs ever.
Apartment 109 was transformed into studio 109 for the day for the writing and recording of our first masterpiece 'Sit On My Face' (no Monty Python stealage in operation). I had the
intro lyrics and melody in my head and an idea of what I wanted it to sound like, and surprisingly, it was easy to articulate this to Adrian, and pretty soon, we were rocking like rocks.
It starts off all spacey and Pink Floyd-esque then just goes into this thrashy punk song and then goes a bit disco Daft Punky near the end.
We hope to upload it to our myspace pretty soon.

The New Whelan's - The No Wallet

Got my first glimpse of the new Whelan's last night. Bits of it aren't finished but it certainly is bigger downstairs. The biggest change is upstairs where the room goes pretty far back behind the balcony and there are random leather couches.
Fight Like Apes were awesome, Delorentos were amazing as usual. Big crowd, plenty of jumping.
It all went a bit Pete Tong when me and MayKay FLA decided to do shots of Jaeger and then someone stole my wallet. I bet MayKay regrets hanging out with me as I got drunker and ranted about my problems. Sorry dude, themsthebreaks!
Oh, and I met Katie Lilga! You rock dude! Bloggers unite!
It was all good fun, but a little rowdy at the end - I left about at about 1. People kept stealing my hat.
Big ups to Dan Friction for the guestlist.
I might head down tonight as well because I want to see Ham Sandwich. I hope they have my fucking wallet. If YOU stole it, you know whose wallet you stole because my NUJ card and business cards and shit are in there, so give it back you schmuck.
Went to Phantom this morning and met Cait O'Riordan who used to play with the Pogues and now plays with a band called Prenup. She's lovely.
In a little while, I'm meeting Adrian MeNoFemBo to get our first song down. He sent me a txt this morning saying his head was "a wet cake." Hopefully that means he's in a productive mood.

Hard Working Class Heroes Schedule
Just one week to go until all things indie and more descend on the Pod complex on Harcourt Street for the fifth annual Hard Working Class Heroes Festival. Check out the site to listen to some free mp3s and make your minds up as to what bands you want to go check out. If you're too dumb to do that, I've recommended some by going *.
You can buy tickets here. Tickets for the entire weekend are just over 33 lids, which is a fucking great price.
Major props as always to the boys and girls behind making this event happen. You guys rock.
I've listed the schedules below. They're in reverse order, because that's how I roll. And also, I just fucked it up a bit - soz lol omg etc.

Ze Weekend: where wudja be goin?
God, they come around quickly, don't they. All hopes of me having a quiet weekend have been more or less screwed given the fun things happening around the city over the next couple of days.I shall be heading to see Delorentos and Fight Like Apes play in Whelan's tonight. It's sold out, but you can still catch the boys with Ham Sandwich tomorrow night. Before that, there's the match, which hopefully won't be that much of a nightmare. I might go to the Mongrel party at the Spiegeltent later and catch Super Extra Bonus Party but I can't go too crazy because...
...if you listen to Phantom tomorrow morning you'll hear me on the Kiosk talking about moosick. NadineRocks. Might have quiet drinkies before Evil's House Warming tomorrow eve, should be fun. May check out the Ting Tings at the Pod.
On Sunday, head along to the Tea Dance in Dragon, which will be raising money for the Emerald Warriors rugby team. There's also a baking competition to find the gayest tart in Dublin, so if you're up for it, get cookin'. Free cocktails too, so come along, it's only a tenner.
So, have fun whatever you do this weekend.

MeNoFemBo update
MeNoFemBo tracks will be reaching you very shortly. Both myself and Adrian (Iano is in Spain and Ragin Spice has to go through the terror of the MeNoFemBo hazing process first) are meeting up on Saturday to get the bones of two tracks I wrote this week down. The first one is a jazzy number called 'Sit On My Face (And Tell Me You Love Me)' and the second is untitled (possibly called 'Breaking The Habit') about mortgage brokers who do too much cocaine.
It's all very exciting. In preparation for a day of rehearsals and recording, I've told Adrian to buy 'Happy Birthday' by Modeselektor and he has started drinking already and is sending me important advice by txt like "buy a banana."
I'm sure it'll all go very well. Even though we hate each other.

Jerry
I met Jerry from Ben & Jerry's ice cream last night. He is so nice. It's such a cool story - setting up an ice cream parlour with his mate in an abandoned petrol station in Vermont...
I also met Lesley, who is the climate change ambassador for Ben & Jerry's in Ireland. I met her first in London a while ago and she is such a cool chick. Her campaign has been going for a year. EcoBiz aims to make small Irish companies more environmentally friendly and she has done a great job. She's a real inspirational person - going to the North Pole, and ending up having a giant picture of her in a bikini by a glacier in Times Square (as chosen by Al Gore. Word.) and educating so many people and businesses in the process.
So well done to Lesley and the crew at Ben & Jerry's who seem to actually mean what they say when it comes to corporate responsiblity. You can check out their Climate Change College here. And big up to the Thinkhouse homies too.
Remember, you have to give mad props to a girl who ran around the North Pole in a red bikini

Tuesdays (thirsty)
Tuesday of course means karaoke in the Front Lounge. Luckily for the world, I could not be convinced to get up and perform this time following my disasterous turn on stage a couple of weeks ago. I tried SO HARD to discreetly enter Helen's name for a go of 'Girlfriend' by Avril Lavigne, but each time she caught me and ripped up the form. Foiled I tell you, foiled. Helen forgot her phone so I have it. Helen, your txt messages are all really boring.
Ragin Spice and Wreck It Like Rebecca were also out. Ragin is the trial drummer for MeNoFemBo at the moment - huzzah!
Some very important MeNoFemBo updates coming later in the week. Holla!

Dice Bar: smashy smashy
Atonement

I went to see this last night. It's amazing, check it out. Keira Knightley is on her way to icon territory.
The King's version looks equally amazing.
The King's version looks equally amazing.
While I was having a pre-film plum sake in Yamamouri with Simon, YoCo and Anthony, Claire Magtastic txtd me saying a truck and crashed into a Luas beside the Dice Bar and the whole building is wrecked and will probably have to be torn down. Does anybody have an update on this? Haven't heard anything about it since.

Have you seen this crown?
My crown is missing. Already. The crown originally went missing at a party in Harold's Cross in the early hours of Saturday morning. I believe it was stolen by a French man, although he could have just been putting on the accent to assure anonymity.
The crown has since been spotted at Dragon on George's Street on Saturday night by an observant friend who said a man was wearing it. I believe it to be the same crown, although it might not be the same man.
Anyone who was at the Spiegeltent on Friday night will recognise the crown immediately. I could just buy another one, but this crown already holds many happy memories for me and in its short time in my possession it has graced the heads of a Sky News reporter, a TV3 anchor woman, many friends and random people, and a large number of Sunday Tribune employees. So I want it back. Please keep your eyes open around the pubs, clubs and streets of Dublin.
Bring the crown home.

"A series of happenings under the stars in one of the most beautiful settings in the capital city, Some Days Never End is where cutting-edge 21st century musicians and the most thought-provoking contemporary artist of the 20th century come together to play.
Located in three tented structures pitched in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, the home of the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Some Days Never End will apply equal weight to both music and art. Given the time of year, these structures will be heated. The third structure will feature the high standard wide ranging food and drink associated with POD Concerts festivals.
Besides the musical performances (see full list of artists below), Some Days Never End will also pay tribute to Andy Warhol’s Silver Factory, an apt homage to mark the 20th anniversary of the artist’s death.... Some Days Never End will feature key works from this hugely influential period, including iconic films such as Eat and Sleep, which will be specially chosen by the Model Arts and Niland Gallery who are presenting a wider exhibition of works from this period entitled The Eternal Now (running Oct 06-Dec 22)
Some Days Never End is presented by POD concerts in collaboration with The Model Arts and Niland Gallery and IMMA and supported by The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh. The Model presents The Eternal Now, a wider exhibition of works from Warhol and the Factory, from 6 October to 22 December."

Baggot Inn whoop whoop
Just had lunch with Tiger in the Baggot Inn. I heart the BI for these reasons:
*good food
*amazing lumberjack fries
*the digital portrait of Arthur Guinness that moves every 15 minutes
*beer taps on the tables so you can pull your own
*really nice and friendly staff
*chocolate brownie amazingness. Drool
*great smoking area
*right beside work
Good pub. Check it out.

aah!
(if it doesn't come up straight away, just refresh the page and it'll arrive on the right hand side at some stage. Scaredsies.)

I should probably join the gym or something. Hmm.

Stole this from The King of the Interweb. It's got that key ingredient that makes a classic YouTube vid: dumb and clever in equal measure. That rhymes.

Leona!

At last Leona Lewis (who myself and everyone at 109 is obsessed with) has a song. She has been hiding under a Simon Cowell-shaped rock until now, but her new single is out and about. It's called 'Bleeding Love'. Listen to it here
Not sure what I think of it. I do like my ballads, but it sounds kind of old-fashioned. Still, bit of a grower me thinks.

Ze Weekend
Hmm. Four nights in a row. Bit tired now.
Thursday was Pirate Sounds, which we all know now. I still have the cut on my head where the pirate punched me. Arrrr-ow.
Friday was fun. Went to Toners with Izzy for Burco's hat party, then RoRo came down and everyone was there: Ed, Viv, Nif, Bean, Killer, Aoife Ni O, everyone. Fun times. Then I went to Crazy P with YoCo and Tiger came down too because it's in his hood. Great night, it was jammers, sold out, off the chain, etc. Big up to Anthony for the guest list. Once again, one of those nights where you meet everyone you know, which makes it all the better. And, believe me everyone LOVED the crown. I suggest if you're feeling tired or low and have to go out, wear a crown, it rocks. After that, I jumped in a taxi, picked up RoRo @ Bia Bar and went to a party in Ed's gaff which lasted for quite some time. Didn't stop me and RoRo and Laney dancing like fools to Abba and The Killers at stupid o'clock in the morning when we got back to 109 though. Danger Bay.
Saturday was album launch time. Watched the first half of the SHITE rugby match and then went down to Doran's to catch Super Extra Bonus Party and Kill City Defectors - big up to the KCD's for the guest list and the album. It was packed and SEBP were great as usual. See this band. Now. When KCD came on, there was a giant brawl during the first song which was crazy. But they dealt with it, and rocked it. Great gig. Go and buy their album.
Sunday was chilled enough. Actually that's a lie. Watched the crap match (stupid Kerry) and then went to Hogans for one with Claire and Felicity. Then I went over to Dragon with the boys from Emerald Warriors RFC. They're having a fundraiser on Sunday in Dragon, so buy a ticket and head along and support this rugby team because those fuckers in France aren't doing much good for us at the moment now, are they? Then me and Tiger and YoCo went to Calvin Harris in Meeting House Square in Temple Bar. He was such an unlikable performer. So much drunken annoying inter-song banter. He kept saying stuff like "I love MySpace and Bebo," so Tiger would randomly scream "FACEBOOK" which was quite amusing. We got loads of 3-D glasses too, which proved popular later in the night. Still, they played 'The Girls', which was all I really wanted to hear. Then we went to the G. Was going to go down to the Spiegeltent after but am glad I didn't now because I'd be totally wrecked.
YoCo has photees so I'll post them when she gets her ass out of bed and emails me.
