2fm Screen Dating

I forgot to mention SCREEN DATING! courtesy of Rick on Monday night. I headed down as a journo mole for a piece I'm writing to a private cinema where we watched Dreamgirls. The first half hour was fine, but then it totally jumped the shark and everyone wouldn't shut the fuck up singing. Jennifer Hudson was good though. After the cinema, everyone went across to the Gingerman and I chatted to the singletons and the lovely Amanda and Joan from Rick's show. I attempted to get a double-blogger-photee with Rick but my camera died. Oh wellsies. Anyway, for more info, you're just going to have to read the article.

PS: shout out to my Mammy who dropped a dozen Krispy Kreme into my gaff from Harrods on Monday. What a ledge, loike.

Want to be a fifth Wren?

A message from LoMax Records:

You Can Be the 5th Wren!

As the Wrens’ whirlwind visit to the UK and Ireland approaches (dates below), the search is on for a temporary member.

As Wrens aficionados will already know, much of their repertoire is a rich, polyphonic musical tapestry; altogether too much for four mortals to attempt live on stage.

So, enter the Fifth Wren… Anybody can apply to be in with a chance of getting up there with the band and playing one of their songs with them. Simply email 5th_wren@wrens.com to enter, then hot-foot it along to their website (www.wrens.com) to learn your part which is printed on sheet music up on the site.

If your name is pulled out of the hat, you will be invited onstage on the night to be the 5th Wren and join one of the best live bands in the world!

“I saw something that was transformative in its magnificence. They play with almost frightening intensity, ripping into their songs as if lives, theirs and ours alike, depended on it… I wonder if any gig will ever seem worthwhile again” Michael Hann, The Guardian

This is where you can grab the limelight:
15th February: Whelans, Dublin
17th February: ULU, London

For more details go to www.wrens.com/fifthwren

A message from Delorentos

"We're Nearly Finished!

After a winter spent hibernating, finshing writing and recording our album we're in the last 2 weeks of studio time, mixing the final songs with our Producer Gareth Mannix... (www.myspace.com/garethmannix)...and finally we can announce that it will be called "In Love With Detail" and it'll be released in the middle of April this year!

We're going to choose the songs that make up our album from: (this isn't a tracklisting...)1.Waiting
2.Eustace St.
3.Any Other Way
4.Until The Next Time
5.The Rules
6.Leave It On
7.Hands off the Boy
8.She's so Modern
9.Basis of Everything
10.All This Time
11.Do You Realise
12.Stop
13.Neon
14.Idle Conversation
15.Eyes Open

In the meantime, we're releasing the first taster of the album with the download only version of "Basis of Everything" available from February 23rd. Basis was mixed by Phil Hayes and Brian Crosby (Bell X1), and we've just put it up on myspace so you can preview it... have a listen and tell us what you think!

We've a couple of gigs coming up; in Cypress Avenue, Cork (our first gig this year), The Granery in Killarney for Murphy's Live (http://www.murphys.com/murphyslive), Dungloe in Derry for the very cool indie delights night (http://www.myspace.com/indiedelights), and Galway at Gugai's deadly Strange Brew club in the Roisin Dubh (http://www.myspace.com/gugai ). Have a look at the gig dates to find out when...We're coming back from Cork to attend the Meteor Awards in Dublin, which should be a good laugh.... but probably not as much of a laugh as driving from Killarney to Derry a day afterwards...So that's it for now, just letting you know that in 2 weeks time "In Love With Detail" will be finished, and for us 2007 really begins to kick off....

Quote of the Day

from Trent on that Kevin Federline Superbowl commercial:

"It strikes me as hugely ironic that K-Fed seems capable of attaining a new level of fame based on making fun of his inability to attain fame."

Blogorrah needs to make money shocker

It has been the question on everyone's lips since 1764. How does Blogorrah make money? Is it building towards selling itself to Google for $1.3 billion? Well, maybe, but for the time being, it has incorporated (subtle) advertising into its posts. Greed is good, people. Just ask Angelina Jolie about her Ayn Rand obsession.

Una

Why do you only see certain people in certain places?

For the billionth time in a row (okay, so maybe five or six times in seven or eight days) I've seen Barry Egan walking towards me down Lwr Baggot Street. I look at my feet. Why do you always see the same people in the same places? I went through a phase of seeing Graham Cruz in the EXACT same place outside Central Bank on Dame Street for about two years. Seriously. In December, I saw Jonathon Reeces Pieces in the same place outside Bia Bar twice within a couple of days. In November, I saw at least one member of Republic of Loose at least twice a week on Ceclia Street/Lane/Place/Row (?) WHY? I may need to see an existential detective about these coincidences ala 'I Heart Huckabees'. There has to be a rational explanation to all of this.

Una McConfused.

I've decided not to take a 'New Direction', so I've removed the 'New Direction' post

so there!

UnaRocks *hearts* Channel 6

Just got word of what their Spring programming is going to be. It's all under wraps until mid-week, but they have just bought MY FAVOURITE SHOW EVER (and if you read this blog and listen to me talk non-stop about it constantly, you'll know what it is) and another series that is seriously amazing too. All will be revealed later this week, but let is be said that it's great to see an Irish station going out on a limb to buy some QUALITY programming - take note TV3.

Glen Hansard = Superstar

The first time I saw Glen Hansard play was a million years ago in an evening gig in Simon's cafe in George's St Arcade. There were 20, maybe 30 people there. He played 'Coffee To Go' and 'The Dancer'.

-FAST FORWARD TO NOW-

So 'Once', a meenie miney Irish film staring Glen Hansard of The Frames and Czech pianist MarkĂ©ta IrglovĂ¡ has won the audience award in the World Cinema Category at this year's Sundance Film Festival. Wow. The film has now secured US distribution, but if you're all the way over here in the Old Country, you can see it next month in the IFI as part of the Dublin Film Festival.

"It's the sort of completely un-hyped, unheralded little gem you go to a festival like Sundance hoping to find and, every once in a while, do." - LA Weekly

"I think the film will be picked up, probably for an arthouse release, but I really expect Hansard to become very well known in the States. Maybe not because of this movie, but I'm willing to bet that this film is a stepping stone to that goal. Some producer or director will see it and see his talent. Mark my words, we'll see him or one of his songs featured in a big movie in the next few years." - aintitcool.com

A moment to reflect on how awesome the Observer was this weekend

As always, yesterday I spent most of the day reading the papers (to be honest, I spend about five hours doing this every Sunday, but I generally only get through three and a bit newspapers.)

I spend SO MUCH TIME reading the Observer though, it was amazing! First there was the food monthly which was a food and music special then there was a really interesting piece on one-man obsessives, namely this guy who has visited 400 Starbuck outlets in order to see why they are so successful and has written a book about it. There was a great little piece about Waverly Inn. Probably most interesting of all was Angelina Jolie's intention to star in a movie about Atlas Shrugged. I had no idea Jolie was a fan of Ayn Rand, it completely changes my perspective on her. There was also a piece on mixtapes and a very telling interview with Leonardo di Caprio.

Phew!

Saturday naaahhht

So, the Lluther gig was AWESOME. I forgot my camera, but Lili has photees here. Moth Complex were supporting and their set was brilliant. I'd never seen them live, and I couldn't believe Aoife's stage presence. She was HAWT! And their sound is so loud and brilliant. Then Lluther were on next - they are so good. Gerry's voice is so powerful and I hadn't seen Sarah play in ages, so it was just like old rockin times! Their set was really tight and loud as fuck, which is always good.

Afterwards I bought their album (Corina, I left it in your gaff, givesies), and drank some alcohol and chatted to Foxy and The Adrian and Rachel and Paddy and Gerry and Marcel from Die Krupps who was playing with Lluther. He is one of the only people I have ever met who probably came out of the womb ready to be a rock star. Such a cool and nice bloke. And very, very.... tall.

After the Village, Corina came and me and Lili and Ian and her had the bright idea to go to Isoldes to get booze (even though it was 1am or something, and they don't sell it after 11.30pm.) Note to everyone who wants to get late night booze in town: if you don't want to go to the secret wine shop on Dame St or the secret winey Indian restaurant in Temple Bar, go to Isoldes, give them a handbag (not a plastic bag which I set Corina off to buy) and they will fill it with cans of beer if you pay them. Easy peasy. mmmmm, then Zaytoons. Oh, and we also bumped into some of the chefs from Chapter One - congrats on the Michelin star guys - yaysies!

Then we went back to Party Central to play Sing Star 80s. I thought I would be amazing, but I wasn't really. The funniest thing ever was Lili, eyes closed practically passed out on the couch and STILL able to remember all of the words to Ice Ice Baby (Lili spent part of her life in Germany, so we can forgive her for knowing such things.)

Then Anthony and Razor and DJ Koze and Damien Lazarus came over and the competition heated up, I beat Damien at 'Little Respect' and Lili sung '99 Red Baloons' I think (in German? With Koze?) I don't really recall much else.

The next morning I got really angry. I was buying the papers in Centra on Dame Street and there was this PRICK screaming at the woman behind the counter. He was really posh and I totally lost it when he said the the woman - who was Chinese - "unlike you I didn't go to college behind a deli counter." Of course, I went nuts and started giving out to him loads for being an asshole and then he got thrown out of the shop - yaysies! What a dickhead, it put me in a bad mood for the day. Which, in itself was funny, because the previous morning I was put in an amazing mood while walking past Christchurch Cathedral I spotted none other than DEAN CAINE. Amazing. AMAZING. He was my hero when I was younger. I even had Dean Caine stickers on my pencil case in school.

I watched Panic Room last night, which was vaguely entertaining. Who is the actress who plays Jodie Foster's kid? She's so beautiful. I know that sounds kind of weird because she's like, 12 or something in the film, but I bet she's a hottie now.

So, Screen Dating - The Sequel for Rick O'Shea's awesome 2fm show this evening. I'm going to go along to the SECRET (is it?) location after TTV and hang out with all the singletons and then write about it. An interesting way to spend one's Monday, I guess.

Lluther play in Dublin tomorrow night!

Don't forget, Lluther play The Village in Dublin tomorrow (Saturday) night. This week their record - Agents of Empire - got 7.5 out of ten in a review in Hotpress.

So after you go see Lluther, check out DJ Koze (Kompakt) and Damien Lazarus at the Temple Bar Music Centre. It's a Remedy gig, so you know it's going to be good.

Now, that's your Saturday all planned out for you!

After years of ligging and blagging, pop has actually eaten itself and next week I will be doing the launching. I'm launching something, somewhere. Watch this space kiddies.

Lili Rocks

she's in Image magazine this week, looking like a hot Victorian stable girl. Check it out.

I don't think I ever posted these photees of We Are Scientists, so here they are

Antics = Danger Bay

went to Antics last night. First to the Bernard Shaw - with Lili, chatted to Niamh from the awesome Ham Sandwich - and then to Crawdaddy. Corina came in too and the place was jammed. Great tunes, and all was well until I started buying a billion bottles of Moet. Danger Fucking Bay kids. So now I'm in work. My head hurts. Oh, I forgot to mention that yesterday I had afternoon tea with Boy George's mum. "Georgie rang me this morning," she said, "I told him 'do you know what fame is? Fame is an imposter'."

Laney's Birthday and more music

It was Lois Laney's birthday yesterday. I met her after her crazy radio voice training thing when I was done work. We met Burco, Lili, Corina and Anthony in Leon - a random cake shop on Wicklow street I had never been in - but needing wine we headed to South William Bar.

God bless Corina for providing us with the night's entertainment in the form of the second season of the L Word. I've been suffering withdrawal symptoms ever since I finished the first series. It's such a great show. I way prefer the opening credits in the first season though. Anywhoo, me and Laney ordered Bombay Pantry food and watched four episodes. And the second series, so far, seems as good as the first.

I'm crazy tired today for some reason.

Listening to the Lady Sovereign record - 'Public Warning', which is just brilliant. It's got so much spunk and general mentalness throughout, which is a lot more than can be said for Mika's 'Life In Cartoon Motion' which is lame pseudo-Robbie Williams pap. Why is this guy everywhere? His life and constructed character might be interesting, but his music certainly isn't. Other stuff I'm listening to this week is Benjy Ferree's 'Leaving The Nest' on Domino which is lovely , Field Music 'Tones Of Tone' - not really feeling it - and Mint Royale's 'Pop Is' which has the Stone Roses 'Elephant Stone' remix on it, pretty cool. It's good to be listening to loads of stuff, because there was such a drought before Christmas, I thought I was going to go crazy. There's lots to look forward to as well - Delorentos first record can't be far away, and new Arctic Monkeys stuff is out in March.

GIGS THIS WEEKEND
Friday:
The Cure V The Carpenters - Hoot Night @ The Sugar Club
John Digweed @ Tripod
Pilotlight @ Temple Bar Music Centre
Air Traffic @ Whelans

Saturday:
Lluther @ The Village
Lotus Lullaby @ Temple Bar Music Centre
Messiah J & The Expert @ Whelans

Sunday:
Plan B @ The Village

Looking forward to February, the Choice Music Prize gig at Vicar St will feature performances by Director, The Divine Comedy, The Immediate, Republic Of Loose, Si Schroeder, David Kitt, Messiah J & The Expert and Duke Special. (No Fionn Regan and Snow Patrol then). The Duke actually rescheduled a headline gig at Ulster Hall in Belfast to play at the event in Vicar St, so he must think he's in with a shot.

Tune in to Simon Maher's show on Phantom FM between 2 and 5 today and here me talk about politicians harnessing Internet applications for their own publicity purposes. Fun!

Greeting Cards and Sandwich Fillings

These are two things I can never decide on. Which I why I am now eating a disgusting sandwich and can't think of a card to get for my awesome flatmate Elaine - it's her birthday tomorrow. Hmmmmm.

I have just laughed my way down Baggot Street to buy my (gross) sandwich because I've started to remember the true randomness of Friday night and hence I feel like I have to repost the Kaboogie night details.

Most of the hilarity ensued in Burco and Killer's gaff:

Aine talking at length about how she only paints vaginas and dildos (something to do with America's Next Top Model?). Anyway, she sells these paintings in the Powerscourt Town House Centre so go buy some.

Ralph the South African and myself discussing various problems with the Mugabe - Mbeki economic partnership for ages, until we realised that Ralph had a crown made out of a cereal box on his head, and it kind of killed the intellectual atmosphere.

Burco making everyone pay attention to her ceral collection (Oatabix and Especially You)

Me thinking I could DJ

Rick and myself trying to remember Oscar de la Hoya's name

Inspired by that episode of Sabrina the Teenage Witch where Sabrina has to be at two things in one evening so she clones herself, but her clone can only say three phrases ("Mr Pool is so annoying", "That is so true", "I'd love to.") we thought of the three most useless phrases you could have if you had to clone yourself and then your clone got arrested. They were "pint", "why is my coat behind the red picture" and "quit busting the hot lesbian's chops".

Killian making probably the most impressive breakfast of all time, and me only able to eat a corner of a waffle because for some reason, I couldn't eat.

Oh, and before that Hannah-Eve running along Dawson street picking up playing cards that she said Burco had dropped and screaming "it's a trail that leads to Burco." I can't believe we got let back into Kennedy's after that one.

Meeting old college classmate Rosa Tomrop-Hoffman

Killian sleeping like he was in a coffin.

Various other things happened, but um, yeah.

******

Yaysies, I just got my new business cards in work. I am officially Diane Keaton in Baby Boom. Bring on the apple sauce, beeatches.

Kaboogie

Went to Kaboogie! on Friday night, Underground at Kennedys. Best night in a wiley while. The place was jammed, and Killian aka Redmonk's set was awesome. By the time Enduser came on, they were turning people away at the door because it was so packed. Such a good atmosphere.

Of course it would have been rude to just hit the hills when the club closed, so me and Burco and Killian and Rick and a bunch of other heads went back to the Fitzwilliam St massif and stayed up way too late. Way. Hence Saturday was a bit of a no-day, hence me bailing on a girly night. J'apologise.

Anywhoo, heard The Spike - Irish Mail On Sunday Daily Sunday Ireland On Sunday Irish Mail - was poking me aul blog for some reason. Unlike Richard's or Kevin's blogs, this isn't exactly a Tribune blog, but a personal blog in case y'all haven't noticed, so I don't really see the validity of talking about it on those terms in a national paper. Journalist shot dead in Turkey

from RTE.ie

A high-profile Turkish-Armenian editor, convicted of insulting Turkey's identity, was shot dead outside his newspaper office in Istanbul.

Hrant Dink, a writer and journalist and a frequent target of nationalist anger, was shot by an unknown assailant as he left his newspaper, Agos, at around 1pm Irish time.

NTV said Mr Dink been shot three times in the neck and police were now looking for a 18 or 19-year-old man.

CNN Turk television said two men had been detained in connection with the shooting.

"This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.": The Village goes monthly

Weekly to monthly is a big jump (back) for The Village magazine. I suppose most people are guessing that this indicates its inevitable cessation. Personally, I would be surprised if the mag ever sees 2008.

Republic of Loose + Microsoft =ROCK AND ROLL?

I just hate it when bands do launch crap or advertising. Ah well, money is money I guess.

WINDOWS VISTA GETS UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH REPUBLIC OF LOOSE FOR LAUNCH PARTY – WOW!!

Dublin 19th January 2007: The countdown to this year’s biggest launch begins today. Microsoft will launch their newest operating system, Windows Vista, on the 30th of January. To mark the launch, Choice Music Award nominees, Republic of Loose, are playing at a private, invitation only Windows Vista Launch Party.  This one off gig is taking place in the Village, Dublin for 300 lucky guests only.

“People cannot buy tickets to this event,” said Mike Hughes, Microsoft Ireland.  They can only get invitations to this private gig by logging on to www.experiencewow.ie when they go live at midday on Monday 22nd January. You’ll need to move quickly though as this is shaping up to be the hottest party in town.”

Windows Vista is the most talked about technology around at the moment. Commenting on Windows Vista, Mike Hughes of Microsoft Ireland said “We’re delighted to work with Republic of Loose and we’re really looking forward to what’s shaping up to be a great night!

“Windows Vista adapts to the way you want to use it— from learning your computer habits so it can prepare applications for faster access to the addition of personalisation features.  Over the past few years, the ways in which people collect and enjoy music have changed dramatically. One thing is certain—music collections have gone digital and Windows Vista brings us digital music in a whole new way and makes it easy to have your music the way you want it to be.”

Mick Pyro, lead singer of Republic of Loose today encouraged fans to go out and get their tickets fast. “This is going to be a great gig and with so few tickets available it will be a great chance to get up close and personal!!”

Windows Vista and 2007 Microsoft Office will be available in shops from 30th January 2007.  Windows Vista and the 2007 Microsoft Office system, were designed, developed, and tested by partners and people all over the world to make the personal computer more "personal."  Windows Vista introduces breakthrough computing experiences that are both visually exciting and intuitively designed, and will positively change the ways in which people use their PC. With the new desktop experience, people can more efficiently organise and find information. Users can "see" files and applications in a way that makes sense to you so they can confidently focus on what they want to accomplish.

Do One Million Irish People Really Have Bebo Accounts?

"London – 18 January 2007: Bebo, the next generation social networking site, announced today that it has broken through the 1 million user barrier in Ireland.

Bebo, which is backed by Benchmark Capital Europe, has seen an enormous growth in user numbers since it launched in July 2005. It now has over 30 million users worldwide and according to Nielson is the second most popular website in Ireland just behind Google. The Year-End Google Zeitgeist also named Bebo as the number one search term of 2006.

The rise in Irish users follows the launch of several new features including Bebo Mail and Bebo Widgets and the continuing success of Bebo Bands."

There are five million people in the island of Ireland. Typically Bebo users are aged in their teens and early twenties. There are around 650,000 people aged between 15 and 24 in the Republic and nearly 830,000 people aged between 0 and 14. I guess the figure makes you presume that every person in Ireland in the demographic Bebo aims for has to have an account. There is no mention of multiple accounts, which have to be a factor in this massive figure.

So, does EVERYONE have a Bebo account then? I do.

New Village and Whelans gigs

A great tail-end of winter and beginning of summer line-up. Notable is the fact that Phantasm returns to its spiritual home - Whelan's on March 1st. Defiantely a welcome change from Radio City. It's a fun venue, but badly designed and, man, it took me so long to get to the bar there the other night.

A night with Jon Ronson

Went to his talk last night at the IFI with Burco and Killian. Randomly, Burco's parents were there too. Twas very interesting indeed. He's so neurotic and funny. He talked for two hours and showed some clips from his documentaries. The footage from the Bilderderg meeting at Bohemian Grove was just crazy.

The best part of it though was even though he was describing all of these crazy people he had done stories on, he was saying that we are all basically crazy with irrational fears, we think things and do things that are nuts, we are paranoid and fantasists, and essentially no different from people whom we think are crazy. Or something. Anyway, it was good.

Afterwards, we popped over to the Mezz to meet Ian and Lili - WELCOME HOME LILI. Yummsies Guinness. It was fine for a while until a band (why are the bands in the Mezz always so LOUD) started playing Bob Marley covers, and we had to leave. Went to Brogans for another couple of scoops and good ol' Roisin 'Phantom' O'Dea joined us for one.

Of course Muggins here forgot to eat dinner, so I ended up savaging the very healthy meal of cheese and bacon fries from Eddie Rockets just before midnight.

In other news, you may have heard me talk about hot GAA players on Newstalk this afternoon, or you may have not. Izzy is on though AS I TYPE. So listen up.

Klaxons - Myths Of The Near Future

got this today. It's out Jan 26, tracklisting:

1. Two Receivers
2. Atlantis to Interzone
3. Golden Skans
4. Totem On The Timeline
5. As Above, So Below
6. Isle Of Her
7. Gravity's Rainbow
8. Forgotten Works
9. Magick
10. It's Not Over Yet
11. Four Horsemen Of 2012

Two quotes that spring to mind:
Lily Allen - "There's not enough rave in nu-rave."
Plan B - "The siren just takes the piss, don't it?"

Already Atlantis to Interzone sounds silly and dated. Obviously nu-rave is just a pigeon-hole invented by the NME so they can write about something, um, 'nu' (I mean, one of their features about 'the dark side of nu-rave' was actually a story about The Knife - what the fuck dudes!)

I can see how Klaxons tracks would work down at Antics for a bit of mentalism, and I'm still looking forward to seeing them live, in the same way that sometimes it's fun to go to Mongolian Barbeque, just because it's random and a bit dumb, but not exactly satisfying.

I like 'Golden Skans' though. It's fun. If Klaxons concentrate a little then they can avoid becoming the Test Icicles of 2007. Most of this record sounds just a little better than Sunshine Underground. Apart from the odd siren and a penchant for monkey powder, there's nothing rave about them at all. When will indie bands stop making what is basically just watered down beats shoved under some disco riffs and claim to be making 'dance music', when really they're just making something a little clubby for indie crowds, most of whom are completely ignorant about electronic music anyway. It's all a bit defeatist.

By the way, I do like the way Universal have changed all of their CDs to opening a different way with that little button thingy at the side and then sliding the cover between four notches on the inside of the front. As Lili would say "me likey."

By the way, talking about stuff on Phantom today on Simon's show around 4.15. Rock.

Good morning everyone, it's the awards no one cares about!

Brits nominations are in folks, so dust down your Lemar action figures...what? Oh my God, he's actually nominated again. Brits = Lemar. Lily Allen is leading the mediocre seige with four nominations for Best Female Solo Artist, Best Breakthrough Act, Best Album for 'Alright, Still' and Best Single for 'Smile'. She's up against Amy Winehouse (rock star), Corrine Bailey Rae (BORING), Jamelia (Lemar) and Nerina Pallot (good record.)

The Best Male Solo Artist category is filled with such delights as James Morrison (James Blunt + Chris Martin), Jarvis Cocker (I hope he wins - maybe he can recreate his Michael Jackson bum-wiggling incident during his acceptance speach), Lemar (wtf?), Paolo Nutini (good name for a chocolate bar) and Thom Yorke (Harrowdown Hill = awesome.)

Best album category, which Arctic Monkeys will obviously win even though it was released approx 9 years ago or something
Lily Allen - 'Alright, Still'
Amy Winehouse - 'Back to Black'
Arctic Monkeys - 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not'
Muse - 'Black Holes & Revelations'
Snow Patrol - 'Eyes Open'

Best group:
Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian (ehhhhh), Muse, Razorlight and Snow Patrol.

Best International Female Solo Artist
Beyoncé, Cat Power (yay!), Christina Aguilera, Nelly Furtado and Pink.

Best International Breakthrough Act
Gnarls Barkley, Orson (how much did the record company pay to get into that category I wonder), The Raconteurs (now homeless since V2 has shut down in the States), Ray Lamontagne and Wolfmother (rawwwwwkkk.)

The most ridiculously bland category is the best single:
Corinne Bailey Rae's 'Put Your Records On', The Feeling's 'Fill My Little World', James Morrison's 'You Give Me Something', The Kooks' 'She Moves In Her Own Way', Leona Lewis' 'A Moment Like This', Lily Allen's 'Smile', Razorlight's 'America', Sandi Thom's 'I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker', Snow Patrol's 'Chasing Cars', Take That's 'Patience' and Will Young's 'All Time Love'. AGHGHGHGHGHGH.

more Arcade Fire shizz

It is finally sinking in that I don't have a ticket to either of the two Dublin gigs. This is not good. MCD people, if you are reading this, please put me on the guestlist. I will give you the four remaining Ferrero Rocher left on my desk (how did me and Izzy manage to eat an entire giant box - minus four - of Ferrero Roche in four days? This is very worrying) and maybe buy you a pint, or a rum and coke or something.

So, how will Una get to Arcade Fire? This is a blagging challenge that will be even tougher than the Arctic Monkeys/Maximo Park debacle at the Ambassador debacle on 2006. Now, I blagged that one, so how can I get in to these two gigs. I want to go to both of them. I am greedy. Time to put the aul thinking cap on methinks.

In other news, the Neno Bible deluxe CD version is packaged in a hinged box with two 32-page flip books designed by the band. OOOOOhhhh, wantsies.

Got some nice CDs into work today; the new Kirsten Hersh one and Benjy Ferree which I'm listening to know. Very nice. Just waiting for Bloc Party and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah to be delivered and then I can go home.

Rock,

Una

PHANTASM!!

Saturday night in Radio City at Phantasm was off the hizzle. I started drinking a little too early (um 4 o'clock?) so I was a little smashy smashied by the time we got there. That morning I had been up super early too (Burco, Killian and myself went to see a screening of Infamous in the IFI at 11am, it was ok, nowhere near as good as Capote). We had brunch (joined by Corina and Sarah Retro) in Irie. Yumsies. And then I went shopping in Dunnes Home - aka best house shop in the UNIVERSE, and then went home to decorate my room as a giant wall of photees.

The Killer and Burco came up to the gaff to help me decorate and we watched Eyebrowy and listened to Arthur Russell. Me, Speedo and Roisin headed down to Store Street for the gig (shout out to Roisin for the guestlist.) It was JAMMERS. Took half an hour to get served, but there was a really good vibe. Because of the bar q though, we missed the first two bands and then headed down front for Ham Sandwich. They were so good. LOVE this band.

Everyone was there - Edel and ex-Tribunite Helen Murray who I hadn't seen in ages. Screamer McNews and her mate Sarah 'Cat'. Bri-Bri, Sinister Pete, Simon (who I spent I don't know how long telling him the story about how my computer froze when I was changing clothes in second live and ended up being naked for two days on the Isle of Lesbos), Moss, basically everyone.

I must also apologise to the Phantom people for stealing a poster. If it's any consolation, it looks AWESOME in my sitting room.

So, so much fun. Would have been more fun if we hadn't decided to crack into the wine when we got home (how is that ever a good idea?) Anywhoo, I had a good next day cure in home cookin' back in Fun Laoghaire (baked ham, cauliflower cheese and mashed potatoes - YUM).

Then my fantastic brother Johnny Boy figured out how to change my DVD player to multi region so me and Laney could watch the first series of Entourage. Amazing. .

Now I'm in work though :( If you're watching TV this evening at eight, switch over to RTE Two, where I'll be on TTV talking about d'Internesh.

Phantasm! etc

Phantasm is happening tomorrow at Radio City (Store St). Live on stage will be Ham Sandwich , The Kinetiks and The Harbourers.

I'll be heading down, so if you're around, say hello :-)

Before that I'm going to a screening of Infamous at the IFI at 11am (EARLY - boohoo). Should be fun. Some people are saying it's better than Capote, some are not.

Forgot to mention that I had pint-ee-oos with Sarah and Paddy in the Long Hall on Wednesday. How I love the Long Hall. The a shnack in Market Bar. Patatas Bravas - yuuuummmmmmm.

I watched The Girl Next Door last night, and IT WASN'T ALL THAT BAD!! However, was scarily interupted by two dodgy looking gangster sorts arguing RIGHT OUTSIDE my apartment door. I'm on the fifth floor - why were they there? Weirdos. Luckily gangster-scarer Johnny B opened the door and coughed loudly and then they left. Very Sopranos-lite.

Want Arcade Fire tickets?

have you got €450?

Tickets for Arcade Fire's two dates on the 5th and 6th of March at Dublin's Olympia Theatre sold out in a matter of minutes. So where did they all go? Happy days for the touts it seems.

Over at Hotpress.com there are arguments raging on the message board over who didn't and did get tickets.

And there are plenty of bids on pairs of tickets €300 and up on ebay.

Well, I didn't get any.

Inventor of instant noodles dies :(

M. Ando, 96, Inventor of Ramen Noodles

By BRUCE WALLACE
Los Angeles Times
January 9, 2007

Momofuku Ando, a Japanese businessman whose invention of instant noodles quickly grew to billions of servings annually around the world, died Friday of heart failure in an Osaka-area hospital. He was 96.

Ando's entrepreneurial genius was to shuck off centuries of tradition and realize that noodles did not necessarily have to be cooked fresh. After tinkering for a year in his backyard shed, he discovered that noodles could be dried, packaged and rehydrated in a bowl of boiling water in just three minutes.

His concoction of flour, palm oil and MSG created a new food that appealed to tastes across Asia and in the United States. Ando began exporting instant ramen into the U.S. in 1970 and a year later created Cup Noodle — noodles that could be sold and prepared in the same container — inspired by the way American consumers plopped their noodles into a cup and ate them with a fork.

His small Osaka firm, Nissin Foods Co., quickly grew into a $3 billion multinational corporation with 29 subsidiaries in 11 countries. Worldwide, the industry sold 85 billion packages in 2005.

As recounted in his 2002 autobiography, "How I Invented Magic Noodles," Ando's eureka moment occurred in 1957, when he noticed a long line of customers waiting for service outside a noodle shop. A year later he introduced what was first called "Chicken Ramen." He began mass production after Japanese customers proved they were prepared to defy the sneering of Japan's traditional udon and soba noodle makers. At first it was a luxury dish, costing up to six times more than fresh noodles.

Under Ando, who remained chairman until 2005, Nissin maintained its market leadership in Japan with a steady stream of new products ranging from picante shrimp to Cajun chicken. In 2005, Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi chowed down in the space shuttle Discovery on a bowl of Nissin's Space Ram, whose vacuum-sealed packet was developed with Japan's space agency.

The Momofuku Ando Instant Ramen Museum opened in 1999 in Ikeda City in western Japan commemorating his inventions.

Born in 1910 to Taiwanese parents, he worked in his grandparent's fabric store as a youngster and went into a variety of businesses, including selling salt, magic-lantern projectors and prefabricated houses and running a school. After the war, he was prosecuted for tax evasion and went bankrupt. But his invention of ramen noodles came in time to take advantage of a sudden expansion of Japanese supermarkets and convenience-oriented consumerism. Most observers credit the company's creatively adventurous TV ads with much of its success in holding market share, including one starring Arnold Schwarzenegger swinging two heavy kettles over his head.

Chemical Brothers first, Daft Punk next?

Following the news that Chemical Brothers will be one of the 'headliners' at Electric Picnic, rumours are rife that Daft Punk are in negotiations to fill the other headlining slot. Some of this is according to Quigo and he tends to know these things - sources in the right places, etc.

How awesome would that be? It also has to be presumed that Electric Picnic organisers will be looking to bag Arcade Fire, given that they're back on the circuit from March.

Speaking of festivals, if you want to go to Glasto, you better get a move on:

As part of Glastonbury Festivals continuing campaign to combat touting, pre sales registration is being introduced this year. Everyone wanting to buy a ticket for the 2007 Festival will first have to register. This will mean supplying your contact details and a passport standard photo. Each ticket sold will feature the photograph of the person in whose name it is registered and will be non-exchangeable.

“It’s a much fairer system,” says Michael Eavis. “It means unscrupulous people won’t be able to sell their tickets on for a profit. The people who buy the tickets on 1 April will be the people who are actually coming to the festival.”

You will need to register between February 1st and 28th, 2007 . You will be able to register both ‘on-line’ and by post. There will be no charge for ‘on-line’ registration but postal applications will need to be accompanied by 2 First Class stamps to cover postage and processing. Forms will be available for download from the registration site which will go live on February 1st, as will the ‘on-line’ registration site. Forms will also be available from February 1st from all Millets stores; Millets will donate 10p for each form issued to WaterAid, one of our Worthwhile Causes.

Information about how to access the registration site, together with full details of how tickets will be sold and their cost, will be announced on this site during January.

So, one week into my January detox, I'm finally enjoying the claret, I mean the clarity. Met Corina last night and after tea and biscuits (and nearly throwing her PSP out the window when we couldn't get through another level of Family Guy) we went to Bingo in The George (CRANBERRY JUICE) and then to the South WIlliam Bar (DIET COKE) and had nice chats. I feel fantastic now that I'm not boozing - yaysies!

Meeting Aoibhinn this eve (probably South William bar again) for post-London goss, but first out to RTE to record TTV bizarrely in the middle of the day, dunno what that's all about.

This Saturday will be a big detox challenge because I shall be frequenting Phantasm at Radio City because Ham Sandwich are playing and I LOVE them. Don't think I've seen them since an IMRO gig at the Village or maybe Crawdaddy. Should be fun by the tonne.

Article of the week: Musings on Web 3.0 and A.I. from the New York Times

(this is actually an old article from November, but I just came across it today when I was writing up something on Web 3.0)

Entrepreneurs See a Web Guided by Common Sense
By JOHN MARKOFF

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 11 — From the billions of documents that form the World Wide Web and the links that weave them together, computer scientists and a growing collection of start-up companies are finding new ways to mine human intelligence.

Their goal is to add a layer of meaning on top of the existing Web that would make it less of a catalog and more of a guide — and even provide the foundation for systems that can reason in a human fashion. That level of artificial intelligence, with machines doing the thinking instead of simply following commands, has eluded researchers for more than half a century.

Referred to as Web 3.0, the effort is in its infancy, and the very idea has given rise to skeptics who have called it an unobtainable vision. But the underlying technologies are rapidly gaining adherents, at big companies like I.B.M. and Google as well as small ones. Their projects often center on simple, practical uses, from producing vacation recommendations to predicting the next hit song.

But in the future, more powerful systems could act as personal advisers in areas as diverse as financial planning, with an intelligent system mapping out a retirement plan for a couple, for instance, or educational consulting, with the Web helping a high school student identify the right college.

The projects aimed at creating Web 3.0 all take advantage of increasingly powerful computers that can quickly and completely scour the Web.

“I call it the World Wide Database,” said Nova Spivack, the founder of a start-up firm whose technology detects relationships between nuggets of information by mining the World Wide Web. “We are going from a Web of connected documents to a Web of connected data.”

Web 2.0, which describes the ability to seamlessly connect applications (like geographic mapping) and services (like photo-sharing) over the Internet, has in recent months become the focus of dot-com-style hype in Silicon Valley. But commercial interest in Web 3.0 — or the “semantic Web,” for the idea of adding meaning — is only now emerging.

The classic example of the Web 2.0 era is the “mash-up” — for example, connecting a rental-housing Web site with Google Maps to create a new, more useful service that automatically shows the location of each rental listing.

In contrast, the Holy Grail for developers of the semantic Web is to build a system that can give a reasonable and complete response to a simple question like: “I’m looking for a warm place to vacation and I have a budget of $3,000. Oh, and I have an 11-year-old child.”

Under today’s system, such a query can lead to hours of sifting — through lists of flights, hotel, car rentals — and the options are often at odds with one another. Under Web 3.0, the same search would ideally call up a complete vacation package that was planned as meticulously as if it had been assembled by a human travel agent.

How such systems will be built, and how soon they will begin providing meaningful answers, is now a matter of vigorous debate both among academic researchers and commercial technologists. Some are focused on creating a vast new structure to supplant the existing Web; others are developing pragmatic tools that extract meaning from the existing Web.

But all agree that if such systems emerge, they will instantly become more commercially valuable than today’s search engines, which return thousands or even millions of documents but as a rule do not answer questions directly.

Underscoring the potential of mining human knowledge is an extraordinarily profitable example: the basic technology that made Google possible, known as “Page Rank,” systematically exploits human knowledge and decisions about what is significant to order search results. (It interprets a link from one page to another as a “vote,” but votes cast by pages considered popular are weighted more heavily.)

Today researchers are pushing further. Mr. Spivack’s company, Radar Networks, for example, is one of several working to exploit the content of social computing sites, which allow users to collaborate in gathering and adding their thoughts to a wide array of content, from travel to movies.

Radar’s technology is based on a next-generation database system that stores associations, such as one person’s relationship to another (colleague, friend, brother), rather than specific items like text or numbers.

One example that hints at the potential of such systems is KnowItAll, a project by a group of University of Washington faculty members and students that has been financed by Google. One sample system created using the technology is Opine, which is designed to extract and aggregate user-posted information from product and review sites.

One demonstration project focusing on hotels “understands” concepts like room temperature, bed comfort and hotel price, and can distinguish between concepts like “great,” “almost great” and “mostly O.K.” to provide useful direct answers. Whereas today’s travel recommendation sites force people to weed through long lists of comments and observations left by others, the Web. 3.0 system would weigh and rank all of the comments and find, by cognitive deduction, just the right hotel for a particular user.

“The system will know that spotless is better than clean,” said Oren Etzioni, an artificial-intelligence researcher at the University of Washington who is a leader of the project. “There is the growing realization that text on the Web is a tremendous resource.”

In its current state, the Web is often described as being in the Lego phase, with all of its different parts capable of connecting to one another. Those who envision the next phase, Web 3.0, see it as an era when machines will start to do seemingly intelligent things.

Researchers and entrepreneurs say that while it is unlikely that there will be complete artificial-intelligence systems any time soon, if ever, the content of the Web is already growing more intelligent. Smart Webcams watch for intruders, while Web-based e-mail programs recognize dates and locations. Such programs, the researchers say, may signal the impending birth of Web 3.0.

“It’s a hot topic, and people haven’t realized this spooky thing about how much they are depending on A.I.,” said W. Daniel Hillis, a veteran artificial-intelligence researcher who founded Metaweb Technologies here last year.

Like Radar Networks, Metaweb is still not publicly describing what its service or product will be, though the company’s Web site states that Metaweb intends to “build a better infrastructure for the Web.”

“It is pretty clear that human knowledge is out there and more exposed to machines than it ever was before,” Mr. Hillis said.

Both Radar Networks and Metaweb have their roots in part in technology development done originally for the military and intelligence agencies. Early research financed by the National Security Agency, the Central Intelligence Agency and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency predated a pioneering call for a semantic Web made in 1999 by Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of the World Wide Web a decade earlier.

Intelligence agencies also helped underwrite the work of Doug Lenat, a computer scientist whose company, Cycorp of Austin, Tex., sells systems and services to the government and large corporations. For the last quarter-century Mr. Lenat has labored on an artificial-intelligence system named Cyc that he claimed would some day be able to answer questions posed in spoken or written language — and to reason.

Cyc was originally built by entering millions of common-sense facts that the computer system would “learn.” But in a lecture given at Google earlier this year, Mr. Lenat said, Cyc is now learning by mining the World Wide Web — a process that is part of how Web 3.0 is being built.

During his talk, he implied that Cyc is now capable of answering a sophisticated natural-language query like: “Which American city would be most vulnerable to an anthrax attack during summer?”

Separately, I.B.M. researchers say they are now routinely using a digital snapshot of the six billion documents that make up the non-pornographic World Wide Web to do survey research and answer questions for corporate customers on diverse topics, such as market research and corporate branding.

Daniel Gruhl, a staff scientist at I.B.M.’s Almaden Research Center in San Jose, Calif., said the data mining system, known as Web Fountain, has been used to determine the attitudes of young people on death for a insurance company and was able to choose between the terms “utility computing” and “grid computing,” for an I.B.M. branding effort.

“It turned out that only geeks liked the term ‘grid computing,’ ” he said.

I.B.M. has used the system to do market research for television networks on the popularity of shows by mining a popular online community site, he said. Additionally, by mining the “buzz” on college music Web sites, the researchers were able to predict songs that would hit the top of the pop charts in the next two weeks — a capability more impressive than today’s market research predictions.

There is debate over whether systems like Cyc will be the driving force behind Web 3.0 or whether intelligence will emerge in a more organic fashion, from technologies that systematically extract meaning from the existing Web. Those in the latter camp say they see early examples in services like del.icio.us and Flickr, the bookmarking and photo-sharing systems acquired by Yahoo, and Digg, a news service that relies on aggregating the opinions of readers to find stories of interest.

In Flickr, for example, users “tag” photos, making it simple to identify images in ways that have eluded scientists in the past.

“With Flickr you can find images that a computer could never find,” said Prabhakar Raghavan, head of research at Yahoo. “Something that defied us for 50 years suddenly became trivial. It wouldn’t have become trivial without the Web.”
