Top 5 Albums of January 2007

It's never to early for a list, right? RIGHT? Ok. Well then, here are my top five albums for last month. I plan to make a list for every month, because, y'know, and also, it'll be easier to compile the best of the year then. If you disagree, agree, hate me, love me, are thirsty or whatever - use the comment facility to vent thine spleen. Rock. Una

5. Klaxons - 'Myths Of The Near Future'

Oooooooooawwww. Anyone else can't get that part of Golden Skans out of their heads? Me neither. The poster boys of non-new-rave, went indie for their full-length. The singles sparkle.

4. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - 'Some Loud Thunder'

The Brooklyn boys go avant-guarde for their second effort. The occasionally distracting sounds (like that bloody distortion all over the first track) can make it a jarring listen, but elsewhere, it's challenging and original.

3. Gruff Rhys - Candylion

A record of beauty, bounty and thoughtfulness from one of the most innovative and quietly prolific men in indie. Charming.

2. Bloc Party - 'A Weekend In The City'

Difficult second album, yes, alright. Bloc Party lay off the hyperactive guitars and even more ADHD drumming to compose a dark, deeply personal record that documents a confused and angry young man's London life. Touching on everything from school time gay experiences, cocaine for confidence, New Labour's over-zealous attitude to the threat of terrorism and family life, 'A Weekend In The City' begs for the listeners concentration and devotion. One of the boldest indie bands around.

1. The Hold Steady - 'Boys And Girls In America'

Springsteen has become a touchstone of sorts recently, with The Killers raiding 'Born To Run' for their latest effort, but The Hold Steady have more than a soundalike connection to The Boss, being the first independent artists since Bruce to grace the cover of the Village Voice. A bombastic and youthful record, it revolves around serious commentary on drunken escapades. Killer guitar licks and tales of love, loss and beer make this the best album of January.

Worst albums of 2007
Mika - 'Life In Cartoon Motion'
Little Man Tate - 'About What You Know'

Hold Steady only came out on this side of the water last month.

It's excellent, have you heard any of their previous albums Una? I think Seperation Sunday is really good but not heard the first one.

"i thought mika was chico from x factor for ages" BEST ANALYSIS EVER - nice one Quigo!

Yeah, The Hold Steady record only came out in Europe in January.

Haven't heard any of their previous stuff Ian, to be honest, but I plan to check out the back catalogue as soon as I get the chance

The Hold Steady wins my award for 'Most Over-rated album of 2007 so far'. Very dull. Husker Du, and numerous others, did that kind of stuff way better...

nooooooo!

I love it. Yeah, it's not crazily original, but it just does what it does so well. Like Ronseal, or whatever.

The more I listen, the more I think it's very average, sorry chick.
Have you heard that Field Music album? It's top stuff. Grinderman are also rocking my anti-clotting socks off too (that's a whole other story).
Pity we didn't get to chat on Monday in the madhouse with all the crazy rescheduling, I'm on at a different time too. Didn't see you at the Arts Lives launch?

Not feeling the Field Music record at all - we're going to have a big Hold Steady / Field Music Celebrity Death Match!

Yeah, I've changed to Tuesdays now; live for the first time in ages, eek, better not say fuck or bugger.

Didn't head to the Arts Live Launch in the end - got stuck in work :(
