Choice Music Prize

The Choice Music Prize - the competition that awards the best Irish album of 2006 - reveals its shortlist on Wednesday 10th January. Then on the 28th of February, all the nominees will play at Vicar Street and the winner will be announced.

Likely candidates for the shortlist? I predict the following:

The Immediate
Fionn Regan
Director
Damien Rice
Si Schroder
Miriam Ingram
Republic of Loose
Snow Patrol
The Frames
The Blizzards

I want Republic of Loose to win, but I reckon The Immediate will, which is cool, because they are awesome too.

Gotta be Si Schroeder. In time it could well wind up being my second favourite Irish album ever (nothing is ever going to touch Loveless)

would be very surpised to see damien rice making the cut - dont think the journalists and DJs who normally make up these panels like Ricer. Would also be surprised if the Blizzards make it - they're just muck.

Hopefully it will be The Immediate - savage album - and maybe Si Schroeder to do a Julie Feeney.

thanks Sandwich Boy!

Yeah, Ian, I like the Si Schroeder record too. Everytime I go back to it, I hear something new.

Shocking as it is, '9' has actually grown on me quite a bit. The first four songs are really good, but the rest is pretty dodgy.

I was debating (in my mind) whether The Blizzards would make the cut, because if they do, they will be the most 'conventional' on the list. They remind me of the Revs - but better, obviously. The album has done really well here, so that might help, but not sure.

Any other recommendations from people - how about Electric Penguins - are they in with a shout at all?

I guess all will be revealed later today!
