Still stuck for something to do on New Year's Eve?
There's plenty on.
First up, the party in the wine bar in the Italian quarter with tunes from the awesome Redmonk aka The Killer. Also Remedy's party at the 40Foot in Fun Laoghaire is going to be HAAUUUGE.
Elsewhere the brilliant Delorentos end their rocking year in Whelan's along with The Flaws and Pinky. Humanzi and the awesome Stagger Lee (if you haven't ever seen them play, check this band out, they rock) play the Radiator party in the Hub. Rugby hotties The Blizzards take over the Village. The Frames have sold out Vicar Street, and 80s throwbacks Spring Break follow their two gigs at the music centre with a partay in The Sugar Club. So now yiz have no excuses to catch some good music as the clock strikes 12.
Happy New Year to one and to all. 2007 is the year of the pig, so all of y'all born in 1983 (that includes me) should be excited about that. Apparantly it means something according to the calender I got free in the Chinese takeaway the other day.
Rock on,
Una
PS: ACHING to know what my albums of the year are? Pick up the Sunday Tribune tomorrow, as myself and the rockin Neil Dunphy give you the good news.

PS: I am so dissapointed by how bad the Top Shop sale is.
PPS: I went to the South William bar last night which is lovely. They really have done a good job on erradicating the minginess that was Mischief from the place. Plus they sell pies! Check it out if you haven't been there yet.
PPPS: I'm on Phantom FM at 3.30 today - listen up!

UnaRocks *hearts* Entourage
It really is the best thing around right now. In the past couple of days, I have watched the entire first season and am half way through the second and am completely in LOVE with it. What an awesome show. Check it out if you haven't already.
I Love Last FM
If you don't have an account on it - set one up! It's brilliant, especially if you want to listen to music at work/home and your music library is on another computer.

Spring Break - woohoo! (and a reunion)
(I have photees to accompany all this but no goddam blank cds to take them off my laptop and put them on this computer. They will come. Oh yes. If I build it, they will come.)
Went with Roisin to Spring Break on Friday night. SO AWESOME. They played some amazing tunes; We Built This City On Rock and Roll, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, Dancing In The Dark, Waiting For A Star To Fall - all the classics! So there was some Corona, some baloons, some serious dancing, and lots of sweat (which I know is kind of gross, but it's true).
Can you believe (because I fucking can't) that it's five years since I left school? Crazy. Some of the peeps organised a reunion of sorts in Dakota last night. It was really brilliant to see some of the people again. Predictably enough, everyone looks five years older. But it was cool, random, surreal. I didn't catch up with everyone though but updates on a few people:
Emma - teaching in Hollypark, the primary school we went to
Gemma - finished her law degree and starting her internship next year
Cait - training in acupuncture
Eimear - got back from Australia on Friday, chilling out
Sinead (Shinners) - teaching in a school in Sandyford
Sinead (Gannon) - working in some biz in London or something
Paddy - working in some business stuff
Stiofan aka Stiffy The Master Debater - teaching Latin in Colaiste Eoin
Fonzie - M.I.A. after being shot outside a club in Moscow last week
Caoimhe - working in legal affairs (or something) in RTE
Daraine - working in research and TTV in RTE
Hilary - training hotel managers
There were loads of others there; Miriam, Ciaran Murphy, Orla Nic C, Kev, Eoin Power, Niamh O Brian, a few more, but I didn't get to talk to everyone.
Randomly my big sis Dee ended up in Dakota too, with her mates from school; she was with Siobhan from TV3 (whose BF was filming for TV3 in South Africa when I was over there last month, good craic bloke) and another chick Barbara.
Me and Dee got a taxi home together. The taxi driver told us we were good singers after we blasted out that East 17 Christmas song when it came on the radio.

D'oh!
So if you were at the Phantom music table quiz in the Sugar Club last night, you would've seen me squirm on stage trying to remember who wrote the Simpson's theme tune for the tie breaker to end all tie breakers. I couldn't remember and the MCD team (nooooooooooooooooo) beat the Half Tribune Half Biscuit team. Nevertheless, I think we did ourselves proud, plus I won a Depeche Mode DVD, a Faithless CD and the Oasis edition of Frustration (the game). So yaysies! We practically won anyway, hopefully they'll be a rematch soon.
Before the table quiz, I had quite the delightful day. First off, had to get cheesy photo taken for the Tribune's Christmas TV pages. Quite amusing, you'll see the results this Sunday. Then I RAN down to Phantom to do my last slot on Simon's show before Christmas. Then Tadhg came a' callin' and we walked around the Christmas market in the IFSC and ate everything in the universe (mulled wine, giant hotdogs, chocolate marshmallows and strawberries, felafal (sp?)) Yumsies. Then I met the Niamh-meister in the International for a pint and then met Izzy and Elaine in the Central Hotel and then took Iz and Laney to Acapulco to meet Ro and Meadzer. Didn't have time to eat because of pending table quiz (and, obviously had eaten the universe in the IFSC) so just had a gigantic margarita (sp?) and toddled off to the Sugar Club.
Still haven't started Christmas shopping :(

jingle bells, Una likes cocktails (that kind of rhymes)
So had RTE TTV drinkies last night. Started off in RTE itself, in the new building with beers. Then into town and met Sean who had left the Pharell gig. Went to the Front Lounge and then Rogue. I through a strop because they wouldn't make me a dirty martini. (I think people are going to start to dislike me in this town, oopsie).
Then today I was in work (what's that? week off? SCOFF) for a meenieminey bit and then had to go to Newstalk and pretend it was Christmas Day for a TV special pre record thingy.
Then I bought a tin opener. Don't tin openers ALWAYS break? ALWAYS. Most of them are so shit, it doesn't matter how expense they are. So I always buy cheap ones, and then they break quicker, obviously. Anywho, tin openers will probably become obsolete considering everything has ring pulls now. Even cat food. But I bought one anyway because the broken one was lying in my kitchen drawer taunting me. TAUNTING, I say. Um, then I bought Christmas crackers.
So I am finally 'home' for Christmas now, as in Fun Laoghaire. I thought it would be a smart move as my festive socialising was getting out of control their for a bit. Plus my brother just bought a new massiff HD TV so I can watch America's Next Top Model properly. But tonight I was sitting on the couch eating sausage and butterbean casserole and drinking lucozade and watching the True Hollywood Story of Kate Moss on E! and all I could think of was iwannabebackintowniwannabebackintown. I suppose, the thing about living in town is even though I complain about Dublin constantly, you can always go out when you want to, whereas here, going out is a hassle, and I don't really know anyone around Fun Laoghaire anymore and it's a bad scene anyway so sigh.
So tomorrow, I'm back in town. Have to drop into work for a bit and then down to Phantom's studio to do the usual Wednesday Internet slot on Simon's show, then to the Phantom charity table quiz in the Sugar Club. Might stay in town afterall, maybe I came home too early...

"Hello again for the last time in 2006. It’s been a hell of a year. Touring with the Human League for the past 14 days has been an brilliant experience. Neosupervital recommends a tour with the League whenever possible.

In the words of Jason Byrne "it's funny."
How was your weekend. I did VERY little. Only left the house once (on each day) on Saturday and Sunday. Had some vino with Roisin and watched 'Glitter' on Friday night. Yes, it is the worst movie of all time (although, I haven't seen Gigli yet. Saturday night; watched the first bit of the X Factor final and then went to see The Departed with Tadhg. Great script, Mark Wahlberg's character was amazing, loads of Boston memories (apart from all the murders). Then we went for a beer in the Front Lounge until we remembered it was a Saturday night and should get the fuck out of town, whcih we did. Sunday, watched the repeat of the X Factor (Una = sad) and then watched Miami Vice which sucked. So there you go, my RIVETTING weekend.
Today I'm in work even though I'm MEANT to be on my Christmas holidays. Have to finish loads of stuff though, so no rest for the wicked etc. This evening is the last TTV Internet bonanza before Christmas, so make sure you tune in at 8pm. I'm talking about Christmas websites, which is not exactly shocking. RTE drinkies afterwards, yaysies.
Haven't started ANY Christmas shopping yet. This is not good.

Justin Green gets top PR gig, burns tent in celebration (JOKE, don't sue me)
MCD’s Justin Green, has been elected President of the Public Relations Institute of Ireland (PRII).
Green succeeds Pat Montague, Managing Director of Montague Communications, who held the position for the past two years.
One of the most experienced PR and marketing executives on the Irish entertainment scene, Justin’s role as Marketing and Public Relations Director of MCD Productions has brought him into contact with some of the biggest names in the music, theatre and entertainment worlds – including Madonna, U2, Britney Spears, The Rolling Stones, Robbie Williams, Eminem and Neil Diamond – and seen him involved in major national and international events such as the Slane Castle concerts and the MTV Music Awards.
In addition, Justin has acted as consultant and co-ordinator for a number of TV specials for leading acts and played a significant role in organising promotional and sponsorship initiatives with brands that include Guinness, Coca Cola and Tesco. He also played a key role in organising both the Irish Government’s millennium celebrations and the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2003 Special Olympics.
Speaking about his appointment, Justin stated: “I am deeply honoured by the enormous vote of confidence members of the PRII have shown in me by electing me as their President and intend rewarding that support throughout my term of office. A key objective of my presidency will be to ensure that professional standards are maintained to the highest level, that services to members continue to be enhanced, and that our international links are improved.”
“In particular, however,” he continued, “ I want to achieve greater understanding of the role of PR in the business, political and cultural life of Ireland and will do all in my power to ensure that our profession receives the recognition it deserves amongst our peers.”
Justin has been a member of the Institute since 1999 and has held a number of key positions on National Council including Honorary Treasurer, Chair of Education and, most recently, Vice-President. He also spearheaded the Institute’s membership taskforce in 2004-2005.
Paddy Hughes of Drury Communications has been elected Vice President, with Stephen Rawson taking on the role of Hon Treasurer. Among the council members elected were Pat Montague (Managing Director, Montague Communications), Tony O’Brien (Director, Tony O’Brien Communications), Neil O’ Gorman (PR Director, Banks Love Marketing Communications), Orla Burke (Director, Fleishman Hillard) and Laura Fitzgerald (Press & Publicity Officer, RTE Television).

Blog of the year: Blogorrah (and UnaRocks of course)
Radio show of the year: everything on Phantom, and Rick O'Shea
TV channel of the year: Channel 6 for actually making Irish music TV again
Shop of the year: Office for having loads of Vans in stock always
Phrase of the year: anything that ends in ‘sies’
Other things that made 2006 special; my homies, The Things Hallowe’en party in the Hub, the Spiegeltent, Anthony’s guest list love, Burco coming home, still having a job, tolerant flatmates, launchy launchy, my cats: Biccie and Jam, everyone at the Trib, my new laptop, 109 Adventure, good films on long haul flights, my niece Amelia.

Why?
here is a blog from people who have moved from San Fran to Dublin. WHY?
Also, I've been meaning to post my albums of the year, but I can't really because they will be appearing in the Sunday Tribune soon and it would RUIN the surprise. Even though I don't like surprises. But y'all feel free to try to influence my top ten (even though I've already decided what it is) by posting on the comments thingy.
It's rainy and gross today.
Crysies.

Christmas Office Party. Una behaved herself... ONLY JOKING
The pain today, the pain. Owsies. Last night was our Sunday Tribune Christmas party. Journalists + free bar = bad. Equation of doom. Of course, I turned into an evil boozey monster and am paying for it today in a major mofuckin way. I want someone to destroy Reynard's so I don't ever end up there again. I can't believe they haven't barred me yet, after the years and years of abuse I have caused and tried causing in there. So tragic.
Anyway, sympathy please. Or you could just laugh at me as I try to string some words together on Q102 at 5.20 this evening.
6th bottle of water not helping.
Crysies.

Karen O's Home Recordings
The leaking of a CD-R labeled 'K O At Home', which was found in Dave Sitek's (TV On The Radio) apartment has caused a bit of controversy. Stereogum, Dreams of Horses and a few other torrent sites have the tracks, which should become more widely available in the next few days.

Duke Special
Went to see Duke Special in Crawdaddy last night - Phantom shindig type thing. Great fun; brilliant set; nice interlude from the lovely Julie Feeney; chats with Neil, Jim Carroll and Peter from V2 aplenty; mulled wine; mince pies; jokey jokinghood with Roisin and the Phantom heads; Zaytoons kebab.
Very cold night though - proper (bo) Winter (selecta)
Before I went to the gig and after RTE stint, I moseyed up to Burco's where her new laptop can make awesome timelapse movies. We made one about PUCA CHAIR (the best game ever). Hopefully I'll have it up on YouTube soon.
Christmas party number 4 tomorrow. Eeek!

Decent Irish music review and so on website Muse.ie returns in 'December'. Well, it's December now and it's not up yet, so I suppose maybe later in the month.
In other news:
Electric Picnic will NOT be a four-day event in 2007, as rumoured, but will remain at 3 days. Tickets go on sale today.
Lily Allen has a go at the NME for not putting women on the cover.
Andrea Roche is on Podge and Rodge tomorrow night. Hee hee. The Roche Tapes published by Blogorrah (aka the best blog in the world) are still causing smiles across the universe. Ray Kennedy (at that time with INN) is the other voice.

UnaRocks Article Of The Week
My mate Ronan has a blog. It's a music blog. Most of it features music I don't recognise, because we aren't into the same stuff really, but he's a damn good writer and most of his opinions are completely different to mine, so I like reading his posts even more.
So the article of the week is from Beat Research:
'They like pop (but it's ok, a MAN is making it really'

Friday, Satuday, Sunday
you know it's nearing Christmas when the parties are getting closer together. And also via looking at the calender. Went to Tadhg's going away / birthday party on Friday which turned out to be a SHAM! (Apart from the birthday bit). Turns out he's not moving to London - to become a giant Sky News newsman - until the start of January, so there shall be plenty more drinkies to have until then.
Saturday was a bit of a college reunion fest. I was struggling to recover from Friday night, and almost didn't make it out, but like a true trooper I got through it and joined the heads in Bia Bar, before retiring home early enough. Until I was awoken by a party in my gaff at 4am. Oopsies.
Chilled on Sunday - mucho paper reading (how awesome was The Observer on Sunday - music review of the year + Huffington interview) and then watched a bit of a dodgy Angelina Jolie movie (aren't they all).
As usual, I'll be on TTV on RTE2 at 8 tonight but THE MAGIC OF TELEVISION means I'll also be at the Duke Special/Phantom party at that time in Crawdaddy. Mulled wine and mince pies are promised. Woohoo!
Una
Reading - Norah Vincent - 'Self-Made Man'
Listening - Edel's show on Phantom (meaning I'm late for work)
Eating - sushi from sushi king
Drinking - coffee from St Lucia (SO strong, but yum)

I love Joe.My.God.
it's one of the only blogs I've kept reading over the passed couple of years: choice entry from today (here)
What an awesome blog.
In other news, I got some cool books in work today;
Kiss My Arse: The Story of the Pogues by Carol Clerk
The Essential Rock Discography by Martin C Strong
Big Babies Or: Why Can't We Just Grow Up by Michael Bywater
by the best one I got is;
Drink! Wine Is Made To Be Drunk, I Am Drunk, Therefore Am I Wine by Lisa Swerling and Ralph Lazar. This is shaping up to possibly be the best book of all time. It's basically a little thought on every page about how alcohol is good for you. Example quote: "I was abducted by aliens. I was really quite scared but then they offered me some little drinkies and I felt fine." Conclusion, everyone needs this book in their lives.

Would the real court case please stand up
MCD have taken an action to recover losses from the non-appearance of the world's biggest rap star, Eminem, at Slane Castle in 2005.
The promoters are suing Liberty Syndicate Management Ltd., and other defendants for the losses occured.
The gig was cancelled at relatively short notice, with the singer pleading nervous exhaustion. The cancellation proved to be a major blow to the status of Slane as a festival venue.
No major artist could be enticed there to headline in 2006, with the two year hiatus threatening to make it all the more difficult to re-establish what had been an annual fixture in the rock calendar for a number of years, against the increasing opposition represented by both Oxegen and the Electric Picnic festival, both of which went from strength to strength this year.
The case taken by MCD is against the event insurers and has been accepted into the Commercial Court by Justice Peter Kelly, who presides over the commercial list.
Correspondence has been ongoing between the parties since February 2006. Proceedings were issued early in August and the case was accepted into the commercial list this week.
The grounds for the refusal by the underwriters to make good the MCD claim are unclear. Neither Slane Castle nor Lord Henry Mountcharles are party to the action. Liberty Syndicates is a wholly owned subsidiary of Liberty Mutual, with the group's underwriting being handled through Liberty International. "The Lloyd's Syndicates and London are an integral part of the Liberty Mutual Group," the company's website states.

greetings from the rainy caribbean!
seriously, I'm in St Lucia and it has rained every day since I got here. Oh well. The first day was fun though, because it was sunny for a bit. I bitch and moan sometimes about my job but when you're sailing on a catamaran around a Caribbean island with a rum punch in your hand, then that's a pretty sweet situation.
Yesterday was AMAZING. We went on a canopy tour of the rain forest, which basically meant getting suited up in absailing gear and ziplining across the top of the forest from tree to tree, sometimes a hundred feet high. Brilliant stuff. Then we went on an ATV trek. It had been raining loads so there was so much mud, but we just quadbiked-aramad through the puddles and eventually came to a meadow on top of a cliff on the Atlantic side of the island. It was just a sheer drop on both sides and empty beaches below us with the waves crashing against the cliffs. Completely unforgettable. Everyone was very impressed with my three-point turns too. Think it's time to take that driving test! Oh, I forgot between the zip lining and the ATVs we went swimming in a waterfall pool. Rock.
Today, we went to a volcano, but it was raining loads so we just made it to the crater and didn't get to walk around much. Then we went to botanical gardens and ate this goo stuff that surrounds cocoa beans in the pod. Tasted like Sprite. Yumsies.
What else? Oh, I have a new favourite cocktail: Dirty Banana - condensed milk, banana, coconut liquer, coffee liquer and SHITLOADS OF RUM. Yay! Good lord, the rum is so good here. So its the beer. It's called Piton and is like a lighter but drunker Corona. So goooood.
No other news really. Leaving tomorrow and flying overnight so I'm back Monday afternoon.
Oh, my bags got lost for two days and I had no clothes so the whole time I was dressed in neno pineapple shirts from the hotel gift shop because there are no clothes shops around. I looked like the cast of Saved By The Bell: The College Years on spring break.
Byesies!
