"Piece Of Shit"
I know I'm late to the game on this, but I was away! Here's Pat Kenny getting stormed on the Late Late Show.
Met Corina and Sarah last night for girlie dinner in Yo Thai. I had a green curry which was yum, but couldn't eat that much of it because my stomach is in bits. Think it's return of Una's demo ulcers part 851. Boo.
Probably won't be blogging much this week because I'm off to St Lucia in the morning, and not back until Monday. Don't know if I'm really up for another long haul flight (Thailand, South Africa and the Caribbean in the space of a month and a half is a bit much), so I'll just have to get the aul Xanax/Valium cocktail in and grin and bear it/pass out.
Very little music being released at the moment, but I'm listening to the new I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness ep, the new Cancer Bats record, Jay Z - 'Kingdom Come' and the Mum Peel session. Also compiling my albums of the year list, which is fun.
Alrighty, back to work!

It is so hot here
Seriously. High 30s, dead heat, no shelter, completely flat land, surrounded by sand.
I have a nightmare of a throat infection. Got it from swallowing dust and sand during a particularly windy period, which is a bit of a bummer.
Met Simon on Tuesday night and we went to a couple of fun bars; Cubana and The Bronx in Pink Town (the gay district, unsurprisingly). Then we just hit the hotel bar for a few more. It's so dodgy having a late night here though, because I'm up at 6.30am every morning. Sheesh! Then last night, I met my mate Aidan for a couple of drinks at the Waterfront. He just happened to be over here on holidays. Coincidence-arama.
I'm getting really tired now, what with all of the work (painting and building in the morning and afternoon, writing in the evening), and the heat. On Tuesday evening we went to Imizamo Yethu, another township where the guys had been working for three years. The poverty was way worse there than it is here in Mfuleni. Niall Mellon told me today that the life expectancy in the townships is 43 years of age. I was wondering what it was, because I haven't seen one elderly person since I got here.
Anyway, loads of the houses are nearly done and all of the families are waiting to move in. It's amazing to see the difference in the shacks they live in and what will be their new homes tomorrow. Sorry I haven't posted any photos yet, but I will do in due course when I can get around to it.
Back on Saturday - peace out!

Cape Town
Greetings from the southern hemisphere!
So here I am, in the 24-hour business centre in a hotel in Cape Town. I'm here writing an article on the redevelopment of townships in Cape Town by an Irish project called the Niall Mellon Township Trust. Every year, hundreds of Irish builders raise money and travel to South Africa to build housing in some of the poorest parts in the country, shanty towns where entire families live in one room shacks. Two and a half million people live like that here, that's more than the number of people who live in proper houses.
There are 350 volunteers here for a week. Most of them are builders - some are not, but learn on the job. We are based in the township of Mfulemi, where 25,000 people live in shacks. The target is to build 50 houses in 7 days. By next Saturday, 700 people including 500 children, will have new, safe homes. The building is going well. I have been painting for two days, and probably will never get the goddam white primer off. It's all over me. On Saturday, we painted for 5 hours in 37 degree heat. Today, it was far hotter and we painted from around 7.45 am to 4.30pm. Needless to say, I have the reddest nose in the universe.
All of the crew over here are really nice and friendly. The builders are such great craic and Niall Mellon is an incredibly nice bloke. The people in the townships are lovely as well. You can see how excited those who are getting new homes are. Most often, the houses that are being built are right next to a shack where people will be moving from, so they're always checking on the progress of the house, and they look kind of nervous sometimes.
Today, I was driving around in a golf cart handing water out to some of the builders, and we stopped at one half built house where the prospective owner, this sweet woman, already had her bench propped up outside the front wall and was sitting there waiting. She looked really proud.
Today, some local volunteers came and helped us. One of the guys was a white South African called Rob (needless to say, all of the people who live in townships are black - apartheid is gone in name and policy, but not in economics.) He has a couple of other charitable orgaisations in different townships. He mainly works in townships that are ruled by gangs, where there is loads of gun crime and violence and desperation caused by 'tick' - that's what they call crystal meth here. Mfulemi doesn't seem like that. Rob says that there, AIDS would be the bigger issue, not drugs or gang crime. 30% of the people in South Africa have HIV/AIDS. The incidents are obviously larger in the townships.
Tomorrow, Desmond Tutu is coming to Mfulemi to meet us, which will be pretty cool. Hopefully I'll get a photo of me and him, which will be the most awesome blog photo of all time. Doncha think?
Right now, most of the people are downstairs at the bar, but I'm kind of tired, so I've spent the evening in my room. Room service is my friend. There were some good movies on TV - 40 Year Old Virgin, and Closer was on when I left. Em, that's about it really for the moment. For some reason everything I write (like this) is kind of boring so hopefully I'll get some inspiration next week for my article!
Anywhoo, I'll post some photos soon, which will probably best illustrate what's going on here.
Rock on,
Una
PS there are some daily diaries here about what goes on on site. I wrote one today, so it should be up soon.

Updated list from the music played during fashion week
One of my favourite playlists are the tracks played during catwalk shows. Agenda Inc compiles what the designers played during fashion weeks in Paris, London, New York and Milan here
Lily Allen, CSS, Peter Bjorn & John, Kelis, Justin Timberlake and Hot Chip are the most popular artists this season, it seems.

Speaking of Bono...
just got the new U2 album - 'U218: Singles', although there are actually 19 tracks on the one that I got because it's the special edition, with the bonus track: 'Window In The Skies', which is a bit of a throwback track, not really into it to be honest.

If you buy one pop album in the next month or so THIS is it. It is so AWESOME, and will be the soundtrack to all of my (unplanned) Christmas parties.
Also got the live Foo Fighters album - 'Skin And Bones'. I didn't even know they were releasing one, but there you go.
Third Eye Foundation have a 'collected works' record out before Christmas, which I can't wait to get my hands on. There's also a Sufjan boxeset out there and a Josh Ritter live album, and a Neil Young live album actually. There aren't many new releases this time of year, but on the plus side, I'm getting sent a few good best ofs, which is cool. Although there was a very unwelcome double whammy today in the form of 'The Ultimate Corrs Collection' and an Enya Christmas album. Shudder.

iPod purge
I haven't listened to my iPod in a week because:
1) Phantom is better
2) I'm sick of the songs on it
3) Charger is SO FAR AWAY in other room
SO. I've decided to purge my iPod of around 70% of the songs on it and add all new ones so that I can remain hip/down with the kids. I'm not one of these people who puts entire albums on the 'pod (exceptions for Nirvana, Hole, MC Solaar and Arcade Fire obviously), so I just really have loads and loads of different tracks from different bands, as most people do. But I'm so tired of most of them. You know you're pissed off with what you listen to when your iPod is on shuffle and you only listen to one out of every ten or twenty tracks and fast forward the rest.
But let me get to the point. If anyone wants to recommend new (or really new, or old, or really old) songs that they love, or jsut came across and didn't know before - You know, perfect songs like Levy 'Rotten Love' or Great Lake Swimmers 'Moving Pictures Silent Films', Stuff that you mightn't buy an album for, or see a band for, but that is just cool and nice and really listenable - please post them in the comments below. I am very open to all opinions and recommendations, because as I said, I'm going to get rid of most of my stuff and fill the iPod up with everything new I want to get to know.
Ok, gottit!
Roysh, really must write this Aha article...

Unsuccessful Hibernation
I'm meant to be in hibernation for November, to prepare for the Christmas party madness of December, but it really isn't happening. Obviously, there was the endless night of stand up comedy booze last Tuesday and I thought it was a blip, congradulating myself on Friday night for staying in with a bottle of wine and a DVD ('Brick' - great movie.) But then on Saturday, I screwed up. Tadhg and I were continuing out LET'S DO STUFF ON SATURDAYS! plan. We went to the Casino Marino in the afternoon, which was brilliant. It's this 18th Century building that looks like a mini Greek temple, which was built as a party house on the Marino estate. It looks tiny from the outside, but inside there are three floors and 16 rooms. We had an awesome guide and I actually learnt stuff! Amazing. Then we drove out to Howth and had lunch in the Wheelhouse and went for a very short walk on the pier because it was really windy. We went back to his gaff to watch X Factor and drank billions of wine, and I thought I was just going to go home and chill out. Laney and Jim Jim and Ro and Johnny B were heading to the Odeon for a fancy dress party in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. I was SO NOT GOING, and stayed at home watching the Dunne fight and drinking wine. And then at midnight, I got a second wind and headed down to the Odeon. Jim has photees I think (me with Chewbacca head, me hugging transformers, me on Jim the Raiders Footballer's shoulders), but I don't think they're very blog friendly. As in, they make me look stupid.
So the November hibernation is not going well, especially when I keep getting invitations to all these journo Christmas parties that happen around this time of year and that I knew nothing of before. Hmm. Plus, the Justice Media Awards shindig is on Friday night. In short, I am bad at hibernation.

An ode to friends of UnaRocks no.2 : Burco

Then: I met Burco when I was 12, so it would probably be pretty tough to go through all the times we've had together. When we left school, we decided to bail from the typical sun holiday crap and went instead to New Jersey with Kate, to hang out with Burco's brother Dan who was on a J1. We made our way up to Manhattan and painted the place red, the highlight being the Rikki Lake Show. We got home on the evening of September 10, 2001. We have caused various injuries to each other. I gave her a fat lip once while kneeing her in the face in a tragic lifting episode. She made me smack my head off the ground when she pushed me, forgetting that I had a gigantic schoolbag on and the momentum carried me into bloodville.
Burco went to study photography in DIT (introducing me to Lili) and I went to DCU to study journalism. Because we both went to colleges where very few people from our school had gone, our social circle was pretty much each other and a few others around us.
Some of the best Burco years were when we worked in the Hub. It had just opened as a venue in Temple Bar and I decided to email them and see if they needed people to review gigs (a ploy for blags, basically). They did. And they needed photographers too. So me and Burco and Lili started to hang out there constantly. We'd literally go to three or four gigs there a week. We saw some of the best and worst bands. Most evenings, we'd start off in Lili's apartment in Christchurch getting suitably inebriated and eventually stagger down to Eustace Street, smuggling ourselves into the venue through the kitchen, and checking out and hanging out with bands like Explosions In The Sky, Jackson, The Beat, The AM and other local acts that were starting to gig around the city, like Neosupervital, The Immediate, Fair Verona, that kind of thing. We didn't get paid, but sometimes, Mick Lennox who was running the place would throw us a few beers. And of course, as students, the prospects of getting free into gigs, and sneaking our friends in too, was better than money. Burco would take awesome photos, and along with Lili's they would go with my reviews and soon the website was probably the best one for a venue in town.
The rest of our college years involved late nights, drinking €3 Guinness in Handels, listening to CDs in Lili's gaff, and in the summer, working our way through the week and blowing it all at the weekends.
Because I was a total slacker, Burco was my key to a job. She hooked me up two summers in a row, once at the photography shop in Dun Laoghaire shopping centre which funded a late summer's excursion with Niamh to Burco's aunties place in the middle of nowhere in southern France. Every day, we'd wake up, walk the twenty minutes to the village to buy bread, cheese, wine and cigarettes. The afternoons were spent swimming, and listening to Third Eye Foundation, which I'll always associate with that time. In the evening, we'd make a big meal for the three of us and drink our weight in wine and talk and laugh. We invented a new language 'Spalk' which involved compressing sentences into words. It didn't get very far. The second one was in Spectra on Grafton Street. They eventually shut the place down.
Me and Burco were always inventing stupid shit activities. Another thing was a game called 'Puca Chair' which involved pushing each other down Lwr Glenageary Road in a swivel chair. Another hapless venture was 'DrunkBlade' - drinking beer and going rollerblading in Dun Laoghaire. Shortlived due to collision with lamp posts. We'd go for a lot of walks on the pier and I used to stay in her gaff all the time. In the summer, we'd make cocktails and sit on her steps drinking away and listening to Jeff Buckley.
When we finished college, I got a work placement and a job in the Sunday Tribune and Burco moved to Barcelona. The first time I visited her was on New Years Eve. She lived in this awesome apartment where we had a gigantic party with about 40,000 mojitos amongst other things, followed by a rave in a massive squat. I can't believe I survived it, especially considering my flight was on New Years Day. I visited again a few months ago, with equal dangerous consequences. We'd go to cool clubs, most of which I forget the name of. There was one brilliant one - Macabra I think - in this old squat run by hippes. You'd pay maybe 2 quid at the door and then buy their home made brew for one or two euro and dance like crazy to drum and bass.
When Burco got back from Barcelona eventually, we went on a bit of a rampage. It was like old times, ending up in the George, falling off the stage while attempting to butt in on the dancing boys. I think she's here to stay.
Now: Burco is a photographer. She lives in a flat on Fitzwilliam St with Redmonk Killer.

Hot Hot Canada
Sinead alerted me to I Heart Music's new list of the hottest bands in Canuck territory. There's 33 on the list. Here's their top ten:
10. Shout Out Out Out
9. Islands
8. Wolf Parade
7. Tokyo Police Club
6. Broken Social Scene
5. Cadence Weapon
4. Malajube
3. Sunset Rubdown
2. Destroyer
1. Final Fantasy
Very interesting stuff. Is there a difference between 'hottest' and 'best'? If not, then UnaRocks' top five would go something like this:
5. Alexisonfire (they're Canadian, right?)
4. The Hidden Cameras
3. Wolf Parade
2. Arcade Fire
1. Final Fantasy
with honorable mentions for MSTRKRFT, Islands, Broken Social Scene, Danko Jones and Kathleen Edwards. Who are your fave Canadians? I know Sarah will have something to say about this one.
This give me an idea for an indie map o' the world... watch this space.

7. Tokyo Police Club
6. Broken Social Scene
5. Cadence Weapon
4. Malajube
3. Sunset Rubdown
2. Destroyer

The dream is over
"Britney Spears has filed for divorce from rapper Kevin Federline citing irreconcilable differences, a court spokesperson confirmed.
The couple had been married for two years and the singer gave birth to their second son just two months ago.
The news broke just a day after Spears made a surprise appearance on David Letterman's TV show.

The court papers show that Spears wants legal custody of the couple's two children - Sean Preston and Jayden James - with Federline getting visitation rights.
The couple have previously denied constant media speculation that their marriage was in trouble.
The pop singer, who has sold 60 million albums worldwide, wed the dancer and aspiring rapper eight months after a 55-hour Las Vegas marriage to childhood friend Jason Alexander."
Dang.

Funny? Like funny ha ha?
Bow before me, bitches. I won the Battle Of The Axe comedy club last night.
But let's remember, it's not the winning or the losing that counts, or the taking part, for that matter. It's about beating Aidan Bishop (again.) Mwoahaha.
As Sarah says: I'm pretty funny, for a girl.

No Music
It's what Neil Dunphy and I are calling the Great CD Drought of November '06. There are literally feck all releases at this time of year, so finding albums to review can be a bit of a toughie. All I have this week really is Jarvis Cocker's new record (not out until January I think, why are they sending it out so early then?) and the B-Sides album from We Are Scientists called 'Crap Attack'. Hmm. Can everybody just retreat to their bedrooms record a swift record and send it in to me please? Sound.
All you kids out there are probably going to some of the Bud Rising gigs this week. I probably should have posted a list of all the gigs, but I'm lazy - so go to the website www.budrising.ie There are loads of good bands playing - CSS, Tapes N Tapes, Primal Scream, Futureheads, that kind of shizz.
And in the weirdest music event of the year - Music Ireland, which is kind of a band safari for industry poachers, Shaz Oye and The Immediate have just been added to a line-up that includes Director, The Blizzards, Dave Couse & The Impossible, Royseven and Boss Volenti and takes place in the RDS on November 25th.

I have arrived
mwoahahaha, I am Blogorrah blog of the day . Thank you Blogorrah - you rock! This is one for all the haters (I don't actually have any haters I don't think, oh, apart from Des Bishop maybe.)
This is what they said about me:
" Her name is Una. Yes, that's her in the picture. She goes to gigs. She has fun. She blogs. She likes cheese. She writes about music for The Sunday Tribune. Sometimes she goes on RTE to talk about the internet. We hear she even does a bit of stand-up comedy upon occasion. We're impressed. Una rocks, you see. And so does her blog. Entitled, handily enough, Una Rocks. And it's Blogorrah's favourite Irish music blog. Why? Cause she knows her stuff. And she means it, man. And we kind of like that."
awesome
I won the Euromillions! Well, €11. And actually it was between loads of people in the Tribune, so I probably have 70c or something. It will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine.
Another week, another weekend. This one was a wittle bit surreal. Decided to stay in and watch the Late Late Show. Biggest. Mistake. Ever. Possibly the worst piece of television I've ever seen. Having learnt my lesson, I went out on Saturday night. Saturday day was fun too. Me and Tadhg decided to distract him from v bad job loss week o' nightmares @ Sky News Ireland and had a day of fun, which began by getting lost while driving to Dun Laoghaire from my flat in town (this is bad, I am from Fun Laoghaire - substance abuse has clearly erased my sense of direction), so we had a yum brekkie in Janet's cafe ("a posh fry", wanted Tadhg, and his dream was fulfilled). Then we got ice cream and went for a walk on the pier like proper fake boyfriend and fake girlfriend that we are and rounded it off with a cwoffee in the 40Foot.
But the fun wasn't over yet - nay! Went back to Tadhg's swish pad, watched X Factor, drank Corona and then went to find the International Aha fan club night for an article I'm writing. It was in the basement of the Gingerman, very surreal. Loads of people were wearing Aha masks and the like. So we stayed there for a while and must have got a bit tipsy because we ended up singing 'Take On Me' at the Aha kareoke machine. Very professional by me, I must say.
Then we went to the Front Lounge and met Vinny and Fred and a few more heads and then we went to Dragon where I lost Tadhg and decided the only thing I could do would be to finish my drinks and walk home without a jacket, which was pretty dumb UNTIL I met friendly friendly Brazilian and Italian neighbours in Newmarket Square and we had a mini party and played keepie uppies.
Last night I watched Coming To America. Best. Movie. Ever.
OK, so if you're watching RTE 2 tonight at 8, you shall see me and I'm also UNWISELY performing at the Battle of the Axe comedy club in the Ha'Penny in tomorrow night. Haven't written any gags yet, FREAKING OUT. Should probably go and do some work now.
Byesies!
Una
Eating: iced caramels
Listening: Damien Rice '9' (the first four songs only, the rest is a bit rubbish)
Watching: Eyebrowy - 'I Prefer The Early Stuff' and tonight McWilliams finding illigitimate pope children or something
Drinking: Thai whisky 'brown spirit'. Weird
Reading: Slow Man by JM Coetzee and also Weight of Numbers by Simon Inges (sp?) - very good, both of them
Wanting: mo money no probelms

I Am A Scientist
I went to see We Are Scientists with Sarah and Paddy in the Ambassador on Monday. They ROCKED. Opened with Against All Odds by Phil Collins and closed with End of The Road by Boyz II Men. Amazing. The gig refreshed by love of their last album - you forget how many brilliant songs are on it until they're all played out in front of you.
Then we went to Zagloba and drank Lech then we met Corina and Anthony and went to Dame Lane where I met an old school buddy Aoife which was fun fun fun.
I have plenty of photees but they're in my camera at home, so I'll upload them later.
I lost my work diary eeeeeeepp. Can anyone remember where I put it? I am lost without it.
Now I am eating a billion jelly beans that Ann Marie in work brought in (left over from trick or treating).
Didn't go to the Phantom launch in the Village last night because I was just so tired after the weekend. By all accounts it was awesome. Oh, nearly forgot! I'm on Phantom today (betweej 3 and 4) talking about internet stuff on Simon's show, so tune in!
Happy November everyone.
