A host of stars, including Lou Reed, Beth Orton, Nick Cave and Laurie Anderson will take part in a tribute concert to honour legendary poet and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen as part of the Dublin Theatre Festival. 'Came So Far For Beauty - An Evening of Leonard Cohen Songs', which takes place at the Point Theatre on Wednesday 4 October, is curated by music producer Hal Willner.
Others that will perform interpretations of Cohen's songs include former Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, The Handsome Family, Antony of Antony and the Johnsons, Teddy Thompson and Gavin Friday, along with Cohen's original backing singers Julie Christiansen and Perla Batalla.
Tickets for 'Came So Far For Beauty' cost €39.50/€49.25/€60/€70 and are available from Ticketmaster outlets nationwide.

...Back To Life...
Got back from Barcelona on Monday, and miraculously still had energy to head to the Hard Working Class Heroes launch at Filmbase in Temple Bar with Corina and Lili. There was plenty of Budweiser, thanks to the festival now being run with BudRising, and more importantly there were salty and vinegary chips.
Ian Archer played first, followed by the pretty impressive Cowboy X and then the FANTASTIC Oppenheimer. It was the first time I saw them play, or even heard their music and I immediately fell in love with it. Lili has photees on her blog and you can check out Oppenheimer here or here
They released their album independently last week and it's well worth a listen. Tim Wheeler sings on the track 'Orchid'.

HARD WORKING CLASS HEROES FESTIVAL LAUNCH
Hard Working Class Heroes - 2006 in association with BudRising launches at Filmbase in Temple Bar on Monday June 26 at 6pm
The Hard Working Class Heroes epidemic kicks off on June 26th 2006 with a Live Launch of the festival in Filmbase, Dublin. Offering a taste of the live talent to expect over the three day festival in October the Festival Website will be announced alongside the National Call for bands. We are also delighted to announce our new funding partners BudRising. Up and coming bands from across the country will be asked to submit their demos to be in with the chance to perform at this year's festival. The successful bands will be chosen by a panel of media and industry judges who will be aiming to ensure that only the finest acts will be treading the boards at this year’s festival. The closing date for submissions is July 27th. This year the registration process will be via Sonicbids accessed through www.hwch.net
Having BudRising on board means HWCH can treat each act to their “sign-up” subscription with Sonicbids so application will be completely free! Organisers expect applications to top last years’ record of almost 700 acts. Band members must be over 18 years of age to apply.
Now in its fourth year, The Hard Working Class Heroes festival has become the Irish independent music industry's most telling barometer. It is the best way to spot emerging acts as well as an opportunity to see more established artists perform in multiple venues over three nights in Dublin's Temple Bar. HWCH is Ireland's only festival dedicated to Irish bands and host venues this year will include Meeting House Square and The Temple Bar Music Centre amongst other venues to be announced.
Meanwhile the support this year of BudRising is an added boon according to festival organizer Angela Dorgan. “It allows us to invest directly in the infrastructure of Ireland’s burgeoning independent music scene and demonstrates BudRising’s belief in the long-term viability of that sector. In addition their series of festivals is something HWCH acts should and do aspire to being involved in.”
This year’s launch, will feature live action from hotly tipped Oppenheimer and Cowboy X as well as Very Special Guest Iain Archer - previous launch acts have included Director and The Amazing Pilots. Many of the emerging acts who appeared at last years festival (see www.hwch.net for details) have seen their fortunes rise with Duke Special becoming the most recent “Signed Recording Deal” story. As part of the festival activities, HWCH hopes to build on this success by once again inviting music industry figures from both the UK and the US to attend the festival – we are expecting to more than double the number of industry execs making the trip this October.
“We received amazing feedback from bands and fans alike last year,” enthuses Festival founder Brian Carroll. “And we’re keenly aware of the need to deliver just as exciting a festival in 2006. We are delighted to be still the only Irish Festival for Irish bands on the established festival calendar, and the success of the showcase dimension is borne out by the overwhelming success of artists from last year’s Festival.”
In addition to hosting performances of 85 acts, HWCH will repeat its very successful series of Music Industry seminars and mentoring sessions this year. Experts from Ireland and the UK will be joined by their counterparts from the US and Canada ensuring that once again, HWCH delivers the international music industry directly to Irish artists.
There are plenty of other treats and surprises in store so be sure to keep an eye on www.hwch.net

One of my favourite bands is no more
Bizarrely, the first item I put on this morning in Burco´s apartment in Barcelona was my JJ72 t-shirt. And then I went online and saw this:
A statement from the band reads as follows:
Reader, we are to let thee know,
JJ72's body only lies below;
For could the grave JJ's soul comprise,
Earth would be richer than the skies.
"JJ72 was born during an Easter many seasons ago; today it dies on the cusp of midsummer eleven years later. "Mark Greaney, Fergal Matthews & Sarah Fox wish to express their deepest and darkest gratitude to all of those with impeccable taste who helped and supported the band. "We remember everything, from mechanical birds in Japan to angels in arid Arizona, from broken bones and Berlin birthdays to predatory Portsmouth spiders. For those who disliked and perhaps despised (gasp) JJ72, thank you - how did beautiful photographs exist without a negative?! We crafted two monuments of magnificence for the future aural pleasure and pain of all would be JJ believers and doubters....and for those who care not for the passing of the petulant yet powerful pup....shame on you! Thank you to Hilary Woods for being a dazzling damsel and thank you to all who played music in/with the band. You know who you are. "

SPAIN CALLING
Greetings from Barcelona! Got here on Thursday and staying with Burco, Killer, Bronik, Paula and Niamh, so, therefore all of the fun in the world to be had. Eabha just got here yesterday and Anthony and El are only down the road so it´s all good.
Can´t really remember what I did on Thursday night. Oh, actually, went to watch a bit of the England match with Tom, Jan and Killer in an Irish bar The Shamrock. Nasty. Then went to meet Anthony, but he got lost, and while Burco went to go find him (which took an hour or something), I was left in this random rock bar with a gigantic jug of sangria. Danger. Bay.
On Friday, we went to go to the Kompakt party where Michael Mayer was playing in this place called the Apollo, but by the time we got their the fucking bouncers had ripped up the damn guestlist, so me and Anthony headed off to Sonar by night. We only got there at around 4am and it was pretty nasty. I thought there would be a real cool vibe, but the place is out in an industrial estate and it´s just a gigantic warehouse with millions of people not paying any attention to the music, just being off their faces.
Saw Matthew Herbert for a little bit, which was pretty cool. The big dissapointment was DJ Shadow, because it wasn´t DJ Shadow really, it was DJ Shadow ´presenting´these REALLY shit rappers. So, I expect that´s what the Electric Picnic set will be too. It was really lame. Then Shadow had to explain to the crowd, he was like "you guys obviously didn´t read the tickets, it´s not actually me playing", but then to appease people, he did a few of his own tunes, and then it went back to the lameness of "when I say hip, you say hop". Totally shit, and shitter still that that´s what it´ll be like at Electric Picnic - so be warned! Who else was there, um, Jeff Mills and Sasha. Too bangin for me.
Last night, we went to this awesome club calle Macabre. Well, it´s not really a club, just this giant squat that´s covered in graffitii and filled with people. Good soundsystem, one euro at the door and one euro for beer. Except the beer is this home brew made in a near by hippie commune and made me not feel good. But DJ Rupture, Shit Mat and Filistine were playing and it fucking kicked ass. Everyone was going crazy, having a good time and just dancing dancing dancing. And when you dance a certain amount, you don´t have a hangover, which is why I feel pretty good right now.
Tonight, Killer, Ed and Various Production are playing at their anti-Sonar party Arson in Place Real. So if you´re around town, and want to hear some good shit, head there. 8 quid at the door and a free drink. Bo.

PS I love mojitos fo life.

Psycho Fest 2!
this looks pretty rockin', with some of the best bands in Dublin playing:
Psycho Fest #2
Dublin - 24th June 2006 – Voodoo Lounge
Having climbed from the putrid swamp waters of the river Liffey, Dublin’s finest rock’n’roll bands come together for a night of sex, drugs and monster mayhem. Masters of the ceremony, Dublin’s terror-merchants The Things, launch their new single ‘Some Kind of Kick’ at the event and are calling upon the city’s misfits to join them for the second Psycho Fest to ever take place. This will be a night you will never forget…blood-lusting virgins and werewolf-loving daddies will witness over 12 of the most gruesome acts to roam a stage together in one night. Admission is a mere €15 and there will be 100 free CDs with a track from each of the bands for those that get there early.
The Things
The Things have become notorious in their homeland for their high-octane shows and have touted their sleazy garage rock ‘n’ roll across the globe, including an appearance at the SXSW music festival in Austin, Texas. They’ve played with The Warlocks, The Hives, The Fall, Peaches, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Arctic Monkeys and Baby Shambles among others. The frenzied live antics of deviant front man Neilo Thing set this band apart from any other. These misfits want your bones! They release their new single ‘Some Kind of Kick’ on the 23rd June 2006, available to buy at Psycho Fest 2006.

Humanzi
Humanzi join the ritual as high priests of hedonistic new-wave and punk. Having recently won the Best Newcomer award at Ireland’s Meteor Awards, they release their latest single ‘Diet Pills & Magazines’ on July 3, followed by their highly anticipated debut album, ‘Tremors’ on July 10 via Fiction/SFR. Humanzi support the Strokes for a second time in London’s Hyde Park on the 21st June prior to this night’s revelry, as well as Oxegen 8th July, T In The Park 9th July, Leeds Festival 25th August and Reading Festival 27th August, so catch them while you can.

www.myspace.com/humanzi
Metro Riots
Heavy retro, life-enhancing, maximum energy rock that is blacker than the Sabbath, flashier than the Clash, out-swims the Strokes and out-shouts a Primal Scream. Influenced by the likes of Leadbelly, Blind Willie McTell, The Stooges, and New York Dolls, Metro Riots released an EP ‘And Now the Tyrants are Loose’ in November 2004 on Genepool Records. New single ‘When You're Gone’ is released 17 July 2006 on Eleven78 Records.

Mainline
Alongside rocking gigs with Sonic Youth, the Morning After Girls and Primal Scream, Mainline’s now sold-out, 7” single ‘Black Honey’ was released on Loog Records in 2005, as well as the fantastic WHO MADE Who remix which took dancefloors by storm. If the nights proceedings weren’t dark enough, expect Mainline to make it just that bit darker.

www.myspace.com/mainline
Stagger Lee
Stagger Lee bring their distinctive tincture of rock’n’roll noir and twisted feral blues in the spirit of Robert Johnson’s devil-at-the-cross roads and Mavis Staples sultry gospel cry. They’ve supported the Kills, the Duke Spirit and the John Spencer Blues Explosion to name a few and have recently recorded with renowned producer Leo Pearson.

The Mighty Stef
The Murphy fella with the vocal chords of a young Johnny Cash, brings his wayward band of rowdy men and their raucous live show to Psycho Fest #2. The Mighty Stef spent early 2006 recording his debut album in Toronto, following the release of his debut single 'Prayer for the broken hearted / Liars' in June 2005.

www.myspace.com/themightystefband
Porn Trauma
Their infectious debut EP 'Sunrise' reached number 21 in the Irish Charts in June 2005. Their energetic live show is fuelled with blues and country influenced rock and they’ve supported Ian Brown, Babyshambles, and The Coral. Porn Trauma release their new 7" single ‘Casanova Blues’ on June 29th.
www.myspace.com/porntrauma
Zealots
Well versed in the canon of blues, new wave and insurgence, the band have gathered an immediate following from their untameable live performances. With bad hangovers come the fear of god, and a sideward glance towards oblivion. Bringing maximum R & B into the 21st century, Zealots are never to be missed
www.myspace.com/zealotsmusic
Sickboy
Influenced by The Clash , The Stooges, Primal Scream, Joy Division, and The Smiths, Sickboy are a four piece with a passion for music, drink, drugs, smokes, women and avoiding the rat race at all costs. Supports have included The Bravery, The Coral and The Paddingtons.

The Motorsounds
Formerly known as The Blues Experimentation Society, The Motorsounds is now Andy McGibbon and whatever drummer he can get his hands on, creating a two piece punk-blues monster. The BXS supported The Soledad Brothers, The Immortal Lee County Killers and Mudlow, among others. Andy is currently preparing a full length album.

The Childish Thoughts
Northern Ireland’s favourite sons of garage, The Childish Thoughts, are the self-styled Kings of Frug Rock. To see this band live is quite an experience. They count the Reverend Beatman among their fans.
Band on an Island
Hailing from Newbridge, Band on an Island can lull you into a warm sense of security with their stark, folk-tinged balladry, then rip your face off with their red-raw punk rock tunes. They put blood, sweat, heart and soul into every tune.

The Leather Girls will round up the night by spinning some discs and adding some much needed glamour to vamp up proceedings. They’ve played with Marc Almond so don’t piss them off – they have whips you know!

Zealots
Well versed in the canon of blues, new wave and insurgence, the band have gathered an immediate following from their untameable live performances. With bad hangovers come the fear of god, and a sideward glance towards oblivion. Bringing maximum R & B into the 21st century, Zealots are never to be missed

UnaRocks' Top 10 Albums of the year so far
Believe it or not, we're half way through the year already, so I think that fact calls for an UnaRocks chart. These are my top ten albums of 2006 (so far) along with a few other hits and misses. Feel free to agree, disagree, recommend or discuss and disgust by commenting on this post.
10
Dresden Dolls
'Yes Virginia'
Smoother than their previous efforts, but just as dramatic. Live, the songs excel.
Download: 'Sex Changes', 'My Alcoholic Friends'
9
Nerina Pallot
'Fires'
Glossy, yes, but every year needs an oomphy guitar chick. Pallot's voice is fantastic, but the commercial sensiblity of her tunes is even better. Anthemic, punchy and vunerable.
Download: 'Everybody's Gone To War', 'Idaho'
8
Shearwater
'Palo Santo'
Okkervil River's Jonathon Meiburg has made the record of his life. Scaling vocals and melodies that Antony would love to steal. Haunting, beautiful and compelling.
Download: 'Seventy-four, 'Seventy-five', 'La Dame Et La Licorne'
7
Kieran Hebden & Steven Reid
'The Exchange Sessions Vol 2'
Wandering, overtly experimental, psychadelic and shambolic. This really is a musical Exchange of two great, yet very different rhythmic minds.
Download: it's only three tracks, so go for it all
6
The Bleedin Bleedins
'Life Without Computers'
A power rock trip that should knock any commercial gods out of the clouds. Melodic, sensitive and pace-heavy. Pay attention.
Download: 'Darkest Day', 'Tonight', 'Running Again'
5
Mono
'You Are There'
Apocalyptic drama from Japan's finest instrumental experimentors.
Download:'Are You There?', 'Moonlight'
4
Republic of Loose
'Aaagh!'
A ripping, dirty, sleaze-filled, self-loathing, spiteful journey into the black heart of Dublin's most debauched funk rockers that borrows and invents sounds of modern hip-hop. Brilliant.
Download: 'Aaagh!', 'I'm Greedy', 'Somebody Screamed', 'Comeback Girl'
3
The Knife
'Silent Shout'
How much better can this band get? Truly on a level of their own, one only has to listen to the opening bars of this album to simutaneously dance, gasp and feel the joy of their genius. Electrifying.
Download: 'Silent Shout'
2
Arctic Monkeys
'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not'
A piece of time, a piece of a generation, a remarkable work of social commentary, which lyrically can stand tall next to Jarvis Cocker and Mike Skinner. Along with the indie disco anthems on this record, the love songs show a tender, angry hopelessness. The most exciting prospect? What comes next.
Download: 'A Certain Romance', 'Mardy Bum', 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor'
1
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
'Show Your Bones'
An absolute triupmh of a record, that will almost certainly be in the same chart place by the end of the year. Karen O's vocals are engaging and loaded with emotion. The roughness of 'Fever To Tell' is crafted into mature and wonderfully constructed songs of breakup and self assurance.
Download: 'Gold Lion', 'Turn On', 'Way Out', 'Warrior'
Worth The Mention
Hot Chip - 'The Warning'
Perfect summer dance boozy electro for indie kids. The new pop?
Gnarls Barkley - 'St Elsewhere'
Momentarily forgiven - c'mon, all that airplay for 'Crazy' wasn't really their fault. Yes, it's the standout track on the album, but there's some excellent grooves to be had amongst its co-tracks.
The Raconteurs - 'Broken Boy Soldiers'
Not the 'Nevermind' we were promised, but a delightful slice of rock from Detroit's finest songwriters.
Biggest disappointments
The Streets - 'The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living'
A coked up parody of Skinner's intelligence. The boy sounded way better yoked and stoned. Come back from the edge Mike!
The Futureheads - 'News And Tributes'
Gone is the bounce of their debut, and we're left to reflect, that really, all they had was a Decent single and a Kate Bush cover.
Dirty Pretty Things - 'Waterloo To Anywhere'
We expected much, and got little. Front man Barat is a fractured libertine with too high expectations and more intent than purpose. An effort, but a strained one.
Red Hot Chilli Peppers - 'Stadium Arcadium'
The once mighty Chillis continue their identity pastiche ripping off Tom Petty and indeed, themselves. Mastabatory guitar licks and ego-driven dirge. These boys should really stay out of the sun.
Vines - 'Vision Valley'
With 'Vision' in the title, it's unfortunate that this record is completely unfocussed. Not shambolic, like we're used to with the sloppy Aussie grunge, but a stinking mess of leftovers from a broken down band.
So, what do you guys think?

MySpace in ya face
The MySpace Festival (or MyFestival if you want to be totally accurate) in Dublin was a fantabulous success last night - well the bit I saw anyway. Me and Lili went to the Temple Bar Music Centre branch ot the three pronged rock approach (The Village and Whelan's being the other venues). Shout out to Saytan in MySpace England for the guestlist.
Zealots were really cool. Heavy and some serious Ian Curtis dancing from the lead singer who nearly broke the mic a billion times and spilt Stella everywhere. You could tell that it was going to be kicking later, because even at 8, the bar at the front was nearly full, and people were actually checking out the support bands in a venue where that doesn't usually happen.
Stagger Lee were next, with one of the best female vocals I've heard in a long time. Really smashy blues rock, totally cool. Met Benni the bassist afterwards who has a cool star tattoo on her foot, which reminds me that I have to get my newest ink redone after it got fucked up (skinny jeans friction + new tattoo = not good).
Then Mainline, who I'd never seen live, but found a demo of theres in work and loved it, big Black Rebel Motor Cycle vibe. Anyway, on stage, they've got great presence - but then 7 dudes in black jeans and leather would have to. Mary Jane and Black Honey are just perfect rock and roll tracks. I would definately check these guys out again.
Finally, the headliners, The Republic Of Loose . What more can you say about these guys? One of the best live bands around at the moment with a cracking new album. All I wonder is how Snow Patrol fans took them when they supported them on their US tour recently?! Anway, as usual, they rocked. It's the third time in a couple of months I've seen them, and they just get better and better. Lili was shocked too, because she hadn't seen them since the last record, and couldn't believe how tight they had become.
Speaking of Lili , she should have photos up from the night on her blog soon (if not right now).

PS. If you're around Boston tonight, check out The Bleedin Bleedins at TT The Bears. Scissors for Lefty, Mr North and Blizzard of 78 are also on the bill. The Bleedins are on stage at 11pm.

Back To Life...
well, that was a nice weekend. Went to the IMRO showcase in The Village on Saturday night which was cool - some great bands Lili has photos from the night, along with some new shots from the Bleedin Bleedins shoot that day. I threw the balls! We stayed in the Village that night. A bit hectic but fun. The DJ played Gold Lion THREE TIMES (including the Diplo remix) which made my night, I must say.
The next day, me and Meadzer went to the Temple Bar Music Centre for some drum and bass action (thanks to Anthony)
Needless to say, I took it easy on Monday.
Tonight Lili and I are going to the MySpace festival (if I can hook up ze guestlist) check out the lineup, pretty cool:
