Weird places photos of me show up

this one of Lili and me at Maximo Park in Limerick was in the Limerick Post (yeah, I don't know, either) ...

...and Heineken are using this one of Corina and I for a promotional campaign in London bars. Why? I do not know.

In other news, went to the relaunch of Spirit on Friday - what a wash out. Things perked up when Corina, me and Lili headed to Bia Bar for a set by the Unabombers. Had a bit of a mini party in the gaff on Friday night, but because of it (and work being crazy on Saturday), I was too tired to head to DJ Food in the Music Centre last night, which was V annoying, but I honestly couldn't get off my couch. So I watched 'Cradle 2 The Grave' and 'Spinal Tap' instead. Welcome home Roisin! Off to bingo in the George tonight with Lili - see yiz down the front.

Riots In Dublin

A bit of a nasty Saturday for a lot of people.

Una's message?
- Sectarian marchers - fuck off.
- And the thugs in the CIRA who purposely damaged property and injured cops, journalists and civilians - you can fuck off too.
- And the 'locals' who joined in the original protests and just decided to wreck as much shit as they possibly could - fuck you too.

So Oxegen might be worth going to after all...

MTV and MTV2 will be there again this year. As much as we all hate nasty evil corporation TV meanies ransacking a festival (run my MCD), anyone who had VIP passes last year must admit that the MTV tent was the only place to be.

The 'accoustic' tent had the best sound at the festival - thanks to needing it for filming - and most of the big names performed sets in front of just handfulls of people. One of these divine moments in history involved me listening to the Futureheads set while standing near Dave Grohl.

Also, because Zane Lowe etc, conduct interviews in this backstage area, all the bands are hanging out, and if you so wished, you could chat to them, or throw stuff in their direction.

So, if you're going to Oxegen, make sure you gets ya VIP on...

PIRATIO

Piratio is the sound sculpturing alter-ego of Barry Prendergast, from Galway... Comparisons are hard to pick, but a jumping-off point (of sorts) might be, on the one hand, the strange enveloping noises that Kevin Shields excels at (when he's not guitar-chugging), or on the other, the austere compositions of Arvo Part, Kaffe Matthews or Labradford. Barry has done visuals (as Eyedrenalin) for the Mor Festival, Digital Bubblebath and loads of other stuff.

MIRAKIL WHIP

Mirakil Whip are Aaron Coyne (guitar, effects, vocal) and Annemarie Deacy (beats, groovebox, sampler, keys). Since their formation in late 2004, this Galway duo have played alongside some of Ireland's most interesting acts and have over 2005 captured the imagination of audiences with their unique blend of experimental guitar-driven synth-electro.

A 'Boutique Festival' for MCD (now where did they get that idea?)

While there’s been no official word from the Denis Desmond camp, it’s understood that the two-day Hi-Fi bash will take place at Belvedere House near Mullingar on August 5 and 6.

Located on the shores of Lough Ennell, the 18th century hunting and fishing lodge is surrounded by 160 acres of parkland and is already used for classical musical events.

Over 100 acts are expected to play on five-stages, with an “executive accommodation” area catering for motor homes.

Hi-Fi is one of the brand names devised by the UK’s Godskitchen organisation, which was recently bought by MCD and also runs the Global Gathering.

Let the battle commence.

Wolf Creek

I cannot believe I haven't blogged about this yet. Wolf Creek is a true story of three backpacker types who are driving around Australia before bad shit starts going down. I swear to god, it's scary. I had to watch it in three stages because I kept freaking out and having to turn it off. Plus, I had nightmares for 3 days.

No aliens, no slashers, no teenagers, just realistic scariness.

It's out on DVD now, and I recommend mucho.

Irish bands - want your single on Fierce Panda Records?

now's your chance, Red Elephant Music Management are taking up the cause:

"Hello All

Well its official, Fierce Panda and Red Elephant Music Management have teamed up.

REMM will now represent the label in an A&R/Scouting capacity and have just opened their post boxes in anticipation of hundreds of cracking demo's.

We won't make promises, but just go under the ethos that every demo we get will be given time of day. The labels history for anyone who is not familiar with them can be found @ www.fiercepanda.co.uk and historically, they have been a singles label which, by releasing singles into the mainstream, have been responsible for attracting deals for the likes of Coldplay, Keane, Supergrass & Embrace.

REMM"

that's all I have at the moment, but details of where to send your demos coming VERY soon. I'll post it in the comment section of this post.

Arcade Fire to play in Cork?

this was reported in the Sun newspaper yesterday. Anyone have any details?

Una

Festival Acts Confirmed

Massive Attack will headline Electric Picnic in September

As for Oxegen, The Who and Red Hot Chilli Peppers will headline.

They will be joined on July 8 and 9 by:
Kaiser Chiefs
Arctic Monkeys
Sigur Ros
Primal Scream
Felix Da Housecat
The Strokes
Franz Ferdinand
Bell X1
Manu Chao
Richard Ashcroft
Damian Marley
David Morales
more to come...

Tickets for the festival go on sale on Friday 3 March and they're priced at €69.50 (one day), €130 (two day) and €160 (two day with camping). A new bastardo charge of €20 will sting anyone who wants to leave their car over night. Ridiculous.

Post your rumours, comments and wishes below.

Big question - where are the Smashing Pumpkins in this equation?

Le Weekend

I am such a dumbass, the Bleedin Bleedins were here all weekend, and I didn't get one photee of them - even though I brought my camera to the gig! D'oh.

On Friday night, I hopped down to Crawdaddy to check out King Creosote and Adrian Crowley who was supporting. Two great sets, later, me, Sarah, David, Adrian, the lovely John McCallion and some of the King Creosote boys were drinking in this random secret elevated room in Crawdaddy that I had never noticed before. The balcony over looked the patio outside the Pod and Adrian decided the best thing to do to annoy all the people smoking outside would be to attach a self-protecting cage to oneself, with a mini fan sticking out of it, and piss towards the fan which would then shower all the people below. I dunno, it seemed like a smart idea at the time.

Saturday night was all about The Bleedin Bleedins who played in the Hub. The sound was a bit fucked up, but the sings (from their upcoming record 'Life Without Computers') shined through as always. Kill City Defectors supported, and I think it's my first time seeing them live (although I vaguely recall partying with them at Nemo in Boston). They were excellent - total party music. Their new single is called 'So Lo' if you can get your hands on it. After the Hub was Whelan's which was crowded and gross as usual. Still being sober Una, I took an early night and left at around two.

The next day, the Bleedins played an accoustic set in Tower Records which went down really well. After which, we basked in the glory of limited edition Bleedin Bleedin match books. Dave gave me a CD of the new album which has a really sweet thank you to me in the sleeve. Such nice boys! Then, we went for coke floats. Sarah joined us, reminding everyone of the forfeit of our bet (me and Sarah have a history of dumb bets - never for money - placed solely on Manchester United V Liverpool matches). I tried to talk her out of making me go through with this one (nipple piercing) to no avail. Sarah, you are cruel, cruel, cruel.

Saying goodbye to the Bleedins for another couple of months, me and Foxy went DVD shopping. I bought some good shit - The Dogtown and the Z Boys and Lord of Dogtown boxset, Secretary, Spinal Tap and Grease. Oh. Yeah.

Now it's Monday morning, and I'm in work. Which is why this post is so long. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Newbies and goodies

I haven't taken much time recently to discover new bands I like, so here are just a few that I have come across recently enough.

People In Planes
'Moth' (accoustic version)
People In Planes are a Welsh band who have gone under a couple of different names in the past - Robots In The Sky and Tetra Splendour. Joaquin Phoenix directed a recent music video of theres.

Love Is All
Talk Talk Talk Talk
Love Is All are from Gothenburg in Sweden, and caught my ear on hearing the fantastic single, 'Make Out Fall Out Make Up'. Their album, 'Nine Times That Same Song' is really quite excellent

[LOST]
This Conversation Never Happened
Lost are a four piece from Dublin that have a distinctly Muse-crossed-with-At The Drive In-but-more-commercial feeling about them. Saw them a few months ago at the Sugar Club in Dublin, and they really are an excellent live band. For young guys, their quality is pretty darn good.

Dr Dog
Easy Beat
Dr Dog are from Pennsylvania and supported Clap Your Hands Say Yeah at the Village recently

The Teeth
The Killer Costume (live)
The Teeth are from Philadelphia and include twin brothers Peter and Aaron.

Una

Happy Anniversary!

to me.

Yes folks, it has been one week since alcohol passed my lips. The return of Una's Stomach Ulcer Nightmare (TM) has put a halt to my drunken gallop, as it were. So I expect pats on back (virtual or otherwise) from everyone IN THE WORLD.

Also on my list of NOT ALLOWED is coffee and painkillers, so along with alcohol it's pretty much my whole entire intake fucked.

I can however eat 'non-green vegetable'.

Hurrah.

Dirty Dozen: Vol 25 - HOMEGROWN

1. Neosupervital - 'Rachel'

2. Mark Winkleman - 'Freak Out For Jesus'

3. Betamax Format -'Behold!'(live)

4. Estel - 'Drive Me To Hell'

half a dozen. The Clap - 'One Race'

7. 66e - '66e Are Home'

8. Fair Verona - 'Pretty Shaken'

9. Staley Super 800 - 'Summer In The City'

11. The Radio - 'Empire'

dozen. Waiting Room - 'Another Take'

Una

I do not want to be in work

I do however, want to be at home sitting on the couch, drinking tea and listening to Miles Davis. Instead, I've had to do with walking to work through St Stephen's Green (soon to be avian flu central) listening to 'My Bloody Valentine' on my Ipod and drinking tea in my twirly chair. This is NOT the same as the former scene I yearn for.

Last night, I sat in a box in our apartment looking at a DVD of holiday photographs.

But things are looking up. Crawdaddy tonight, and the Bleedin Bleedins playing tomorrow YAY.

I Heart My Ass

The 'heart' symbol used to represent love is actually based on the shape of female buttocks, according to a scientist.

Pscychologist Galdino Pranzarone, who studied the origins of Valentine's Day, says the symbol is inspired by a woman's bottom as seen from the rear.

Prof Pranzarone, of Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia, told Discovery News that he analyzed "essential literary and speculative evidence from mythology and secondary sources."

"The twin lobes of the stylized version correspond roughly to the paired auricles and ventricles of the anatomical heart," he said.

But he added that the organ "is never bright red in color" and its "shape does not have the invagination at the top nor the sharp point at the base."

Pranzarone indicated that the ancient Greeks and Romans could have originated the link between human female anatomy and the heart shape.

The Greeks, he said, associated beauty with the curves of the human female behind.

"The Greek goddess of beauty, Aphrodite, was beautiful all over, but was unique in that her buttocks were especially beautiful," he said.

"Her shapely rounded hemispheres were so appreciated by the Greeks that they built a special temple Aphrodite Kallipygos, which literally meant, Goddess with the Beautiful Buttocks.

"This was probably the only religious building in the world that was dedicated to buttock worship."

Is Frank Miller smoking crack?

Batman is reportedly to turn his superpowers to crushing a new foe – Osama bin Laden’s henchmen.

The Caped Crusader will battle al Qaida in an forthcoming graphic novel called Holy Terror, Batman!, according to the New York Post.
“It is, not to put too fine a point on it, a piece of propaganda,” Batman writer Frank Miller told a panel discussion at a San Francisco comic-book convention.

Miller said the comic was “an explosion from my gut reaction of what’s happening now” and “a reminder to people who seem to have forgotten who we’re up against“.

The story apparently sees DC Comics’ famed superhero defending his hometown of Gotham City against a terrorist attack.

“It just seems silly to chase around the Riddler when you’ve got al Qaida out there,” Miller said in comments posted on entertainment site ign.com.

He added that it would not be the first time a comic-book icon had taken on a real-life villain.

“Superman punched out Hitler. So did Captain America. That’s one of the things they’re there for,” Miller said.

A spokesman for DC Comics declined to comment to the newspaper.
It is not known exactly when the unfinished project will be published, but it is likely to be next year at the earliest, the New York Post said.

The Breakfast Club

Elaine and I watched the Breakfast Club last night. It was one third of the result from a threesome DVD buying session, involving three "HOW DO I NOT HAVE THESE ALREADY" movies (the other two being Citizen Kane and The Goonies).

Our viewing session involved Elaine's Marlboro Lights, apple juice and curry rice and curry chips from the newly discoverd 'Chipper Row' which is just around the corner from out apartment. We only recently discovered it because we basically haven't explored that side of our neighbourhood at all. Perhaps it wasn't such a wise idea to walk around there last night after 10pm, as the route includes a horrendous kareoke pub that emits noise similar to some equivilant of Mariah Carey being gangbanged by a coked up crew of foxes and cougars. Incidently, that pub is just opposite another which hasn't reopened since a couple of people were shot dead in the bathrooms there a while back. Yeah, so 'Chipper Row' is not really the Golden Mile.

Anyway, tangent over, watching the Breakfast Club made us think back to the really random things that you forget about youth. So what did we remember? Multicoloured plastic soother necklaces, neon blue hair mascara and glitter body gel. We laughed for about five minutes, and then got back to the movie. Just thought I'd share that.

Clap Your Hands Say Meh

Lili and I attended a much anticipated gig last Saturday. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah at the Village was packed - the biggest crowd I’ve seen in that venue since Electric 6 caused near-death carnage their last year. As the gig wore on, it became pretty darn apparent that the crowd were largely unfamiliar with the tunes however, leading to a shit atmosphere. The band didn’t do much to improve the vibe. The sound was awful, and things only really kicked off near the end with Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood. A three song encore ended with the bizarre choice of a Neil Young cover. So really dissapointing over all. Later on, two members of the band passed out at the table me and Lili and Neil from the Trib were at. Seeing them slumped over pretty much summed up the gig.

But there’s always the after party, which comprised of almost the entire sports department and a few other dudes I didn’t know drinking beer and red wine in my apartment while listening to the Arctic Monkeys record on repeat. Bad Sunday though, baaaaaaad Sunday.

The Week That's In It...

Once again, a truly busy work week is causing me to neglect the blogging world. Darn.

Went to see Rollers/Sparkers at the Globe on Tuesday. These guys are excellent - really intense electronica, kind of reminiscent of Matt Elliot's stuff, so check out the mp3s on their site. The gig they did for Vibrator @ The Globe this week was the last time to catch them live in a good while - I'm told their heading into the vortex that is second-album-studio-time.

Went to see Walk The Line with Sarah and Adrian last night. What a great movie - Phoenix and Witherspoon are amazing, I can't believe they got the voices so near perfect. On the flip side to this, PR companies for the movie and for Johnny Cash 'Best Of' boxsets are paying buskers to play Johnny Cash songs to covertly promote the movie and CDs. Talk about hijacking the undercrowd. What a bunch of losers. If you're a busker - DON'T TAKE THE CASH!

Clap Your Hands Say Blag: off to see Clap Your Hands Say Yeah tonight in the Village, really looking forward to seeing these guys live, as we all know by now the album is awesome. Big shout out to Michael & Peter @ V2 and Declan Forde for sortng out the guestlist for me and Lili. If you're down there tonight, have a good time.

Don't for get to check out the new gig and album reviews on Ireland's best indie webzine Cluas. And if you're based wherever, these guys are always looking for article and review submissions, so don't be shy about it.

Have a good weekend folks - more mp3s and band news coming soon...
